Does it make for a better tournament having an 'easier' half of the draw - with Portugal and Poland having a real chance of making the final, while Italy have to battle it out with Spain and then Germany?

Or would you prefer to have a bunch of last-16/quarter-finals where the winners of each game were more predictable, with the clash of the giants coming in the semi-finals and final?

  2. Portugal's route to the last eightpublished at 18:52 British Summer Time 30 June 2016

Portugal are yet to win a game in 90 minutes, but here they are - two games from the final.

They started off with a 1-1 draw with Iceland, which was followed by Cristiano Ronaldo's now-famous rant where he said the Nordic side "are not going to do anything in the competition". That's fellow quarter-finalists Iceland.

They followed that up with a 0-0 draw with Austria, one of the most disappointing sides in the tournament, and ended with a 3-3 draw with Hungary in one of the games of Euro 2016.

That took them into the last 16, where they beat Croatia - who had been seen as possible finalists - in extra time.

  3. Poland's route to the last eightpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 30 June 2016

Poland come into the quarter-finals having only conceded once so far - but only scoring three times themselves.

They started off their group stage with a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland.

After that game came a 0-0 draw with world champions Germany and then another 1-0 success over Ukraine.

Their last 16 opponents were Switzerland, whom they overcame on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

We ended up with a bit of an anomaly in this year's European Championship knockout stages.

On one half of the draw were eight teams who had never won a major tournament before. On the other half were Spain, Italy, Germany, France and, um, England - with 20 top trophies between them.

That was partly down to Spain and England finishing second in their groups, as well as the new format with third-placed qualifiers.

So Spain and England are out - and one of Germany or Italy are heading home too this week.

But Poland or Portugal will be in the last four.

    Poland. Portugal. Belgium. Wales.

One of these teams will be in the Euro 2016 final thanks a strangely lop-sided draw.

Today we find out whether the Poles or Portuguese will be the first team to book their place in the European Championship semi-finals.
