Iceland (on the right) have actually had more touches in France's penalty box than vice-versa. Getting the ball into the mixer more?

That is brilliant from Paul Pogba, a sliding tackle from the Stuart Pearce textbook. Man and ball. There's not much that Pogba can't do, almost a complete player.

    He just needs the consistency.

Brilliantly worked throw-in, everyone knew what was going to happen but it's very hard to do anything about. Iceland should have scored. They mightn't get many opportunities.

    France 2-0 Iceland

I don't care if you play for Barnsley or Barcelona, a proper long throw is so hard to defend against. Could well be Iceland's route back into the game.

The team that goes on to win the tournament is so often the one that grows into it. You cannot play well in six games in a row, you have to grind results out early on, and that's what France have done. Now they've got that confidence, if it is going to be Germany v France in the semi-final, we'll be getting something special.

  8. CLOSE!published at 23 mins

    France 2-0 Iceland

Iceland need to get to half-time now. Though they do win a throw in a good spot, it's a weapon of theirs - and that's a chance! Nodded on and there's Jon Bodvarsson sliding in on the volley, just over!

Didier Deschamps is, by some margin, no Antonio Conte when it comes to providing technical-area entertainment.

But rest assured, when Paul Pogba scored France's second he was straight out of his seat, punching the air several times.

It was an uncertain start for his team but just listen to the crowd now....

    The jitters have gone.

    France 2-0 Iceland

La Marseillaise rings out around the Stade de France which is in party mood already. Premature? I'm not so sure.

All that chasing England around may have worn out the Icelandic lads...

If you'd said before the game what kind of goals would Iceland concede, you wouldn't have predicted these two.

It was a great leap from Paul Pogba.

Outstanding delivery and a powerful, soaring header from Paul Pogba. He must climb about two-and-a-half feet above his marker. What a goal, right in the top corner, fabulous.

Is that the goal that extinguishes the Icelandic flame? It comes from the corner as Antoine Griezmann whips it in left-footed and Paul Pogba climbs superbly, NBA Jam, he's miles above Jon Bodvarsson and powers the header into the top corner.

Iceland are struggling to deal with the long, direct ball as Paul Pogba floats a 45-yard pass over the top into the run of Antoine Griezmann. Corner ball.

Olivier Giroud owes me a beer for that reverse commentator's curse. I'm bound to bump into him in Salford at some point.

Paul Pogba flies into a tackle and is rather lucky not to be booked. The Iceland fans are still right at it.

We expected Iceland to crumble when England scored early on and they didn't. I don't expect them to get back in the game as quickly as they did in that match though. They've got to keep their heads. France scored with their first real opening.

Joe Wilkinson: Iceland need to get the OOH thing going nice and early in this game. It's like something out of 300. Proper scary Football chant.

Charles Meyrick: I just love this Iceland side and the Iceland fans. That chant - so guttural, so intimidating, so Viking! Come on Iceland!

Elias Orn Einarsson: Let's do this. It is not the size of man but the size of his heart that matters.
