Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo: "I am very happy. I have been looking for this for a long time, since 2004. I asked God for another chance at this because we deserved it. Today I was unfortunate, I was injured but I always believed that these players, together with the strategy, would be strong enough to beat France.

"This is one of the happiest moments in my career, I always said I'd like to win something with Portugal.

"For me this is an amazing unique moment for all Portuguese."

  3. 'The winner always deserves it'published at 23:52 British Summer Time 10 July 2016

    PORTUGAL ARE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE

France manager Didier Deschamps: "The winner always deserves it. You can analyse things but they didn't get to the final by chance. This is the first time I think that a team finished third in their group and ended up as champions.

"Maybe they didn't win many games, but they won the most important one. There were maybe other generations of Portugese teams with more talent but they didn't win - and this team has."

  4. 'We didn't play with the brakes on'published at 23:48 British Summer Time 10 July 2016

More from France coach Didier Deschamps: "The overriding emotion is of huge disappointment, you have to accept it. Portugal are the newly crowned champions.

"Clearly we had our chances but we weren't cool headed enough.

"My players gave everything tonight but unfortunately we lacked what it essential. We have to try and digest this.

"There is no way of reducing their disappointment but we must not forget the enthusiasm of millions of people which our run generated. It is hard to look at the positives now but there are many.

"We did not play with the brakes on but Portugal are good at stopping you from playing. They play as a unit. Without Ronaldo they had one fewer attacking options.

"We didn't play a bad game. We went for it."

Portugal's Southampton defender Jose Fonte: "I was playing in League One a few years ago, it defies description. This could be a Hollywod movie. We’ve written our names in history. This goes out to the whole nation, for the hardship we’ve been through and in 100 years we’ll look back on this.

"France are an amazing team. We lost our skipper who is the best player in the world but we believed to the end. Portugal has a shiny future."

France boss Didier Deschamps: "It is very cruel even though I congratulate Portugal. It came down to very fine margins, we struck the post at the end. It comes down to very little.

"Losing like that is very tough. I won't forget our journey here.

"We lacked freshness, not being clinical but we played Germany three days ago. Despite that we had opportunities but we didn't score."

Portugal manager Fernando Santos: "I am very happy, of course. First of all I'd like to thank God for being with us, my wife, my mother, my grandson. My father wherever he is, he's probably having a few beers.

"I'd like to give my thanks to Greece.

"Cristiano is an amazing example. Today he tried to remain on the pitch. He was very strong in the locker room, he helped all of the boys, that 's the definition of teamwork.

"We have a bright future but right now we need to celebrate."

More from Pepe: "We were going to fight for Ronaldo. At the break the gaffer surprised everyone, he moved the team around. It was a good Plan B and the subs were the right players at the right time.

Portugal striker and matchwinner Eder: "Cristiano told me I would be scoring the winning goal. He and all my teammates.

"He gave me strength and positive energy. And that goal was really important. A lot of hard work went into it. We worked hard from the first minute and right from the beginning of the Euros. We were spectacular. The Portuguese people deserve this."

  11. 'We threw away a great chance'published at 23:24 British Summer Time 10 July 2016

    PORTUGAL ARE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE

Didier Deschamps, France coach: "Even if we were a little bit tired as well, that's not an excuse. We had chances to score, and the last one fell to 'Dédé' Gignac. It came down to tiny details, it was a close match.

"We had chances, as did the Portuguese, but unfortunately they scored. It’s a great disappointment for it to end now, with this final. We must not throw everything that we’ve done away, but we threw away a great chance to be European Champions - not the only one, but a great one."

  12. 'Football is cruel - but magnificent'published at 23:23 British Summer Time 10 July 2016

    PORTUGAL ARE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE

France striker Antoine Griezmann: "Football is cruel but it's also magnificent. It allows us to experience wonderful times and sad times too. We gave everything tonight, we have no regrets and I'm proud of everyone.

"We were not as clinical as we were against Germany, we hit the post and the goalkeeper made saves. It is frustrating.

"Portugal are not only Ronaldo. They are very solid defensively and they scored without him.

"Later down the line I will be proud of winning the golden boot but for the moment I am very disappointed. I really wanted to win the trophy."

Portugal defender Pepe: "There was a lot of suffering, a very intense game.We fought very hard. We had to work very hard and be more humble than the other team, that's the only way to win. We left it all out there, it's the only way to win. We represented Portugal, a beautiful country of immigrants and we represent every one of them. This goes out them.

"It was tough to lose our main man. The man who could at any moment score a goal. He could make the difference but we were warriors on the pitch. We said we would win it for him and we managed to do that."

If you allow the third team in a group stage to go through, they know three draws will be enough. I’m happy to see things like Albania winning a game, Iceland doing what they did but I think the new rule killed the group stages.

The quality levels of the tournament have been disappointing - teams coming here not to get beaten.

On one hand the quality had been one or two steps down. But then we’ve had seen scenes of fans who never thought they’d be a tournament, like Iceland beating England.

It’s been pretty dull and boring a lot of time with a lot of the excitement coming from the smaller teams. The quality has been really poor.
