There were special moments. Two of them tonight, the injury to Ronaldo and the winning goal.

But overall how many memories will we carry of great games?

Pepe has defended very, very, well.

Just once this evening he rolled over five or six times but apart from that when he defends he is a very solid good defender.

They set their system up and said ‘this is how we’ll play, come and try to break us down’. It was a brilliant goal to win it, he was big, strong and skillful. The finish was sublime.

On Andre-Pierre Gignac hitting the post in injury time.

Give him a lot of credit, I don’t see a lot of people do that to Pepe [turning him]. He scuffed it and that’s what allows the ball to go over the leg of Rui Patricio.

Ronaldo can now put himself up there with the greats and an international trophy is maybe what is missing from Lionel Messi's cabinet.

Now he has eclipsed Messi because he has that trophy.

All credit to the France supporters inside the Stade, most of them have remained in their seats. Probably too shocked to leave.

Daniel Woodley: To lose a Final is one thing. To lose it as favourites is another. But to lose it as the host nation has to be the biggest blow

Aashish: Did France leave everything on the pitch?  Not a chance - missed opportunity

Aaron Theaker: Who'd have thought after the bad display against Iceland, finishing 3rd in the group Portugal would go on to win it ? Madness.

Cristiano Ronaldo raises the trophy high above his head. A player who has won so many individual gongs and club honours now finally has an international trophy.

He has won everything bar the World Cup.

  15. 'An amazing story'published at 22:48 British Summer Time 10 July 2016

    PORTUGAL ARE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE

    Danny Murphy
Former England midfielder for BBC Match of the Day

This is for your country, something very few players have accomplished. It's an amazing story for a team who weren't fancied before or during the tournament.

They've shown tonight they possess character and quality. Tonight they didn't need Cristiano Ronaldo. People won't remember he didn't play much tonight, they'll remember he captained them to their first major trophy.

Isn't it brilliant to have a hero and not a villain? Someone scoring a great goal rather than someone missing a penalty.

France did fantastic to get through against Germany and you think on paper it was one of the easier finals they could get but they weren't able to finish it off in the final third.

That's the cut throat business of international management. Didier Deschamps was a Andre-Pierre Gignac shot away from being an absolute hero, the stonemason was beginning his statue.

Now his future is being queried...

    Thierry Henry
Former France international on BBC One

I think France will keep Didier Deschamps. He has done well.

People will question why N'golo Kante didn’t play - when you lose people always question this or that - but I still think he’s the man for the job – let’s see if we qualify for the World Cup.
