The Republic break the shackles and now attack down the left, James McClean whips in a deep cross which Shane Long tames with a brilliant touch. Wins a corner which Hugo Lloris comes to claim.

Not sure Pogba and Matuidi works... Expect Sissoko on second half.

Jeff Hendrick is off for some treatment. The fans and Didier Deschamps are fuming at the length of time it took to get him off. They call time wasting. With a degree of legitimacy. Maybe...

    Hendrick is back with us.

That's a bad decision as France are denied a corner, Richard Keogh heads a cross behind but a goal-kick is given.

The old commentator's curse has struck again as Jeff Hendrick is struggling with a dead leg. He was whacked by Paul Pogba. Limbs like Dhalsim.

Judging by the average positions map of both teams there seems to be an obvious gap for France to attack...

I've been impressed throughout the tournament by Jeff Hendrick, a man who isn't necessarily first-choice for Derby County. He wriggles past N'Golo Kante and keeps the game ticking over.

Both men are able to continue. 'Will Grigg's on fire' rings out around the Stade de Lyon.

Shane Long, an absolute pest, clashes with Patrice Evra and he needs treatment. Ouch, it's one of those when both players kick each other's feet.

    France 0-1 Republic of Ireland

Over 60% of possession for France, six shots and four on target. Ordinarily they'd be pleased with that. In this tournament it counts as a lightning start.

N'Golo Kante is booked for a routine foul in the middle and he will now miss the quarter final - should France get there.

Darren Randolph is everywhere. Paul Pogba hits a hell of an effort from a 30-yard free-kick, all sorts of bend on that one but Randolph is across to make the save. Makes it look routine again.

It was a half chance but it was a decent enough save from Hugo Lloris. Murphy decided to go for goal but the angle was against him

This is an excellent game now, that early goal has made all the difference. N'Golo Kante wins the ball back high up the pitch and Antonie Griezmann finds the solar plexus of Darren Randolph.

Almost two! Wow that really would be a game-changer. The Republic put together their first spell of proper football, starting on the right with Jeff Hendrick and then coming all the way over to the left. They then find Daryl Murphy in the box and he flicks an improvised and accurate shot on the bounce which needs Hugo Lloris to make a one-handed save!

Antonie Griezmann flicks on a header which is another simple save for Darren Randolph as France continue to probe away. They haven't scared the men in green yet as the Irish fans start singing 'We're gonna win the Euros!'

Was the penalty a bit harsh? Possibly. It looked like Paul Pogba was trying to get out of the way. But there was clear contact.

That goal from Brady has got the French fired up. There are one or two challenges going in. They are reacting to what they think is a bit of gamesmanship from Shane Long. But Ireland just need to keep calm.

So far, so amazing for the Republic. Hugo Lloris is called into action to clear from in front of a rampaging Shane Long.
