What a great header from Shane Duffy! Antoine Griezmann whips in a devilish cross which has goal written all over it. It's going to be a tap-in for Olivier Giroud until Duffy somehow flicks it clear...

Ireland need to be mindful. They can't sit deep for the whole game. They need to play like they started the match. They have the players that can hurt France.

Brilliant from Paul Pogba, all athleticism and dainty feet in one, beats two men on the left wing to fashion a cross which Antoine Griezmann heads over the top.

After the late-night horror show of Portugal v Croatia the beautiful game is back. High tempo, high class, high drama so far.

    France 0-1 Republic of Ireland

At the start of this game, Ireland kept the ball well. They didn't try to get it forward too quickly. They kept it, drew France on to them and then went long. You can see that Murphy is too strong for Koscielny and Rami.

What are you made of then France? We are about to find out. The Republic of Ireland must resist the temptation to retreat and sit on that lead too much you feel. Easier said than done of course.

What a start. I spoke of the defensive vulnerability of France and you can see it from the outset. The composure and coolness of Robbie Brady to send it in off the post.

    Absolutely fantastic.

Republic of Ireland full-back Stephen Ward did brilliantly to get the cross in before the penalty.

After that, there was abject panic from the French. They have a weakness at the back and that has already been proven.

France had touched the ball three times before they went behind. Unbelievable stuff.

I was saying that these knockout games need an early goal to get the game going.

He goes looking for it, Shane Long. He knows where Pogba is and feels the contact. he almost kicks his leg into him,. But that shows the vulnerability of the centre-halves.

A man in a four-leaf clovered, three-piece suit. Jacket and waiscoat. Tie. You have to say that is magnificent.

As are renditions of both anthems. You'd have La Marseillaise in your top three anthems wouldn't you?

    Marchons, marchons!
