Both France striker Olivier Giroud (left) and Irish counterpart Shane Long have been heavily involved as their respective first-half touchmaps show, but Long has been more of an influence both in the opposition area and his own box.

I wouldn't say that the Irish midfield has been mainly in 'seek and destroy' mode, but goalkeeper Darren Randolph has made the most passes for the men in green (18).

France had three or four chances. Should Dimitri Payet have had a shot earlier? It was brilliant defending from the Republic

    France 0-1 Republic of Ireland

What a scramble! A right stramash! Dimitri Payet gets into the area, turns one man and gets a shot off which is blocked, it comes back out to Antoine Griezmann, his shot is blocked.

It's frantic, messy but brave and brilliant defending. The spirit of Richard Dunne is alive and well.

    Bodies on the line!

The Republic recognise they are under pressure. It's been a great response from them in the last 20 minutes.

The Republic are ending the half really well. France in a right old muddle.

A strange booking that. Anyway, free-kick to the Republic. Whipped in by Robbie Brady - and headed wide by Shane Duffy! That was close!

  19. YELLOW CARDpublished at 40 mins

    France 0-1 Republic of Ireland

A rival to Shane Long for touch of the match there from Dimitri Payet. N'Golo Kante then fouls Jeff Hendrick, who is booked. Don't know why.

Hendrick is banned for the next game now.

That may go down as the best first touch of the tournament from Shane Long. Unbelievable.
