This game could be out of sight. An unbelievable stop from David de Gea. What a shot it is from Emanuele Giaccherini - flying into the top corner.

  2. HALF-TIMEpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 27 June 2016

That's it for the half. Spain with work to do, Italy have played the perfect half, or very close to it.

  3. GREAT SAVE!published at 45 mins

David de Gea with another worldy. Emanuele Giaccherini cuts in from the left and drills a shot towards the top corner before the Manchester United keeper intervenes. He's keeping Spain in this.

If you have three brilliant defenders like Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli & Giorgio Chiellini, which Thierry Henry described as the best unit in world football, this is a dream scenario. They are rubbing their hands together.

Here come Italy again and Alessandro Florenzi crosses, but it's too close to David de Gea.

  6. YELLOW CARDpublished at 40 mins

    Italy 1-0 Spain

Maybe this was the perfect start for us neutrals? Spain need to ramp it up a notch now but they look frustrated as Nolito goes into the book as he stepped on Daniele de Rossi's foot.

But will Italy be quite so attacking now? If one team can defend a lead....

This game started in a squall; Italy like a tempest that had slowly blown itself out as the game settled down.

But Italy's faster transition and more effective use of wide areas meant that they nonetheless remained the more threatening side and undoubtedly deserve their lead.

Right now, Italy look like a side with more ring-craft - and arguably more desire to stamp themselves all over this contest. This feels like revenge.

Spain try to whip the ball in from a free-kick but it's too strong. Then Leonardo Bonucci makes an error to concede a corner. Luckily Gigi Buffon uses all his experience to come out and punch clear.

Sho Rahman: Completely deserved. Spain look lost out there. Big changes required, maybe even before half time

Kuntal Majumdar: That's Ramos' fault. The foul was totally unnecessary.

    Italy 1-0 Spain

That is the first goal Spain have conceded in a European Championship knockout game since Youri Djorkaeff scored for France in 2000. They had gone 679 minutes without conceding - 679!

  11. 'Italy hungry and quick'published at 17:37 British Summer Time 27 June 2016

    Italy 1-0 Spain

    Danny Murphy

It's a great system Italy use. You can see from up here they are always looking for the spare man and then getting it to the front two. Spain are struggling to cope with it - Italy are so well coached.

The lead is richly deserved. Sergio Ramos gave away a silly foul. The free-kick was always going to be a problem. How hungry and quick were Italy to get on to the rebound?

We can't say it hasn't been coming or they haven't deserved it. More Italian players than Spanish followed up when the Eder free-kick was parried.

    Game on!

Eder takes the free-kick, it's low and David de Gea makes the save, but as three Italian players follow up to Spain's one, Giorgio Chiellini is the man on the spot to tap in.

    Advantage Italy.

    Italy 0-0 Spain

Spain are doing plenty of defending and they need to do more now as Sergio Ramos concedes a free-kick on the edge of the box after fouling Graziano Pelle.

A good chance this, 23 yards out.

Italy striker Graziano Pelle should have got in front of Sergio Ramos when that low cross came in. The wet surface is coming into play.

Italy left wing-back Mattia de Sciglio is causing all sorts of problems down the left for Spain, and drills a cross along the six-yard line which Sergio Ramos shanks over and wide of his own goal but he didn't look in control at all. Could have been costly.

The corner leads to a second then Italy are penalised for a foul.

Andres Iniesta, who is starting to come into the game now, tries a trick and wins a corner for Spain. Nolito plays it straight to the Barcelona midfielder on the edge of the box, but his shot is easily gathered by Gigi Buffon.

Great acrobatics from Emanuele Giaccherini here. We nearly had a second overhead-kick goal of the tournament.

Dominic Clark: Why is everyone taking short goal kicks? Do they not play FIFA?
