    Italy 0-0 Spain

Spain on the attack but Leonardo Bonucci comes out to intercept and sets up a great counter attack. Mattia de Sciglio crosses from the left and Marco Parolo's header is just wide at the back post. Nice from Italy, very nice.

One man watching will be pleased....

Tony C: De Gea to Spain is proving as important as Ronaldo is to Portugal

Joel Pennington: This game only has 3 potential outcomes. Spain by 3+, Italy 1-0 by the skin of their teeth or heartbreaking penalties.

Adam: Can already sense De Gea is gonna have one of those days...nothing getting past him

Spanish striker Alvaro Morata, quiet so far, has some space down the right and wins a corner. As the ball is delivered in, Giorgio Chiellini is tugging on Sergio Ramos's shirt but the referee is not too bothered. The Spanish skipper might have had a case, though.

  5. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Italy 0-0 Spain

Spain finding their feet as their fans find their voices. Jordi Alba makes it towards the byline, pulls the ball back to Cesc Fabregas on the edge of the box but the Spanish midfielder is then charged down by several Italian defenders, including Matia de Sciglio, who makes the block.

    Italy 0-0 Spain

After the frantic start, the game has become more settled now as Spain enjoy possession again but Sergio Ramos has just given it away. Italy surge down the left but Allesandro Florenzi cannot reach Giorgio Chiellini's long diagonal and ends up sliding into the advertising boards.

Both teams struggling to get the ball to hold up on the turf, so maybe the aerial route is a better option. Not sure Spain have that in their locker, or choose to.

The fans - the majority of whom appear to be neutral - are relishing the intensity here. It really is sensational.

Fans sheltering from the rain, players slipping all over the place and Antonio Conte, baseball cap and coat to protect him from the rain, prowling his touchline like a caged and very hungry animal.

Throw in a couple of world-class saves and it is all happening.

There's an obvious tactic from Italy of getting some balls into the box and letting Graziano Pelle win some headers.

    Italy 0-0 Spain

Spain relieve the pressure as David Silva cuts in from the left to switch it diagonally to Jordi Alba, but the ball skids off the pitch and goes out of play.

Italy on top so far, though.

It was a brilliant overhead by Emanuele Giaccherini, but you can't be giving free-kicks for that.

  13. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 11 mins

    Italy 0-0 Spain

David de Gea drawn into another great save as another Allesandro Florenzi cross is nodded back into the danger zone and Emanuele Giaccherini's overhead kick is turned onto the post by the Spanish keeper. The referee penalises Gianccherini for dangerous play but a fine save nonetheless.

Spain under the cosh here from Italy's crosses.

It was a great delivery into the area. Graziano Pelle did exactly what's asked of him as a striker. How David de Gea got down and tipped it around the post...

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 9 mins

    Italy 0-0 Spain

Alessandro Florenzi delivers the ball in wonderfully and Graziano Pelle rises at the back post to draw a great save from David de Gea. Gerard Pique then heads clear from the following corner.

Daniele de Rossi slips at a vital moment but Spain waste the chance to take advantage. Juanfran is then penalised for a foul on Eder. Free-kick wide left about 35 yards out.

It's been a common theme - players are slipping over at vital times. The heavens have opened though and it's pouring down. As footballers, it's lovely to play in this weather. Tell your strikers to have a shot.

Spain get hold of the ball and enjoy some early possession as Cesc Fabregas feeds Nolito down the left but he slips too as he tries to deliver a cross, although I haven't been convinced by the Spanish striker this tournament.

Eder then shoots but his effort on the edge of the area is blocked.

It's an amazing atmosphere here, you can feel the tension. Wonderful support for both teams and it's a fascinating match tactically.

As the rain hammers down, Graziano Pelle gathers the ball in midfield and plays in Eder but the ball is too strong as the Italian striker loses his footing. Antonio Conte has his rain mack and cap on. Spanish fans are retreating to the upper reaches of the stadium to avoid getting wet.
