    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

    Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"At 1-0 up at half time you have to manage the game which Liverpool failed to do. We have seen it so many times over the course of season, the left-back Moreno is good at getting forward but he cannot defend.

"There were no referee decisions that went against Liverpool in the second half. They can't blame the result on that. They had one stonewall penalty in the first half but when you go in 1-0 up at half-time in a cup final what is first thing anyone says in the dressing room? You make sure you don't concede in the first 10 or 20 minutes. What did Liverpool do? They conceded in first 17 seconds."

Sevilla's players, coaching team, the laundry staff, the tea lady...they're all up on the podium at St-Jakob Park to collect the Europa League. That hefty silver cup, fixed onto a yellow marble plinth, is handed over to Sevilla skipper Coke who needs the help of a team-mate or two to hoist it towards the Swiss sky. Not surprising really - it weighs a whopping 15kg!

  3. We didn't do it - Milnerpublished at 21:50

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

Liverpool captain James Milner: "We never started in the second half and it is devastating. We didn't show near our ability and that is the biggest disappointment.

"We were ready, we made sure we said the right things at half-time. We gave a sloppy goal away and never got back into the game.

"The lineman's flag went up for the third goal but the referee gave it the other way. It is nothing to do with the referee, it is about us. We didn't do it on the night that mattered.

"We didn't think about the Champions League, it was about winning this trophy. We didn't manage to get over the line. It is a double blow not to be in Europe next season. We go into two finals and lost both, next time we need to finish the job.

"We have showed our character in the competition but today we could not do that."

Liverpool, led by a miserable-looking Jurgen Klopp, go up the St-Jakob Park steps to collect their losing medals. On the pitch, Sevilla's players are jumping up and down, singing away in a celebratory huddle.

    Liverpool 1-3 Sevilla

    Mark Lawrenson
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 live

"Liverpool had the better of the first half and it was a great goal by Daniel Sturridge. But they never started the second half and if anything got worse. They didn't even have a bright spell after the interval - not even five minutes."

"We didn't do ourselves justice," says Liverpool captain James Milner. Gracious interview from the Leeds-born midfielder after such a dismal night. I'd have told the TV guys where to go...

We knew it was win or bust for Liverpool. Unfortunately for them it is bust. No Europa League trophy, no Champions League football next season. In fact, no European football at all for Jurgen Klopp's side. That's his Plan A summer shopping spree ripped up and thrown in the swing bin.

"Liverpool conceding so early in the second half certainly helped Sevilla. They had the momentum and all of a sudden you are thinking 'Liverpool looked a good side in the first half. They are not at it'."

Jurgen Klopp's trademark smile is, unsurprisingly, nowhere to be seen. The big German growls at referee Jonas Eriksson as he comes onto the pitch to console his players.

Christian Benteke is the target as Liverpool go long. His knockdown/miscontrol falls to Daniel Sturridge who lashes a first-time effort from 25 yards. Direction? Yes. Power? No. Comfortable save for David Soria.
