    First round

Salford Citybridged a 59-place gap in the football pyramid to knock League Two Notts County out of the FA Cup with an historic win at Moor Lane. The Northern Premier League Premier Division part-timers, co-owned by five ex-Manchester United players, were making their first-round debut.

Barry Hayles appeared in the 2002 FA Cup semi-final for Fulham against Chelsea yet 14 years later and aged 43, the striker found himself making headlines for helping propel Southern League Premier Division Chesham United to a surprise 1-0 win over League Two Bristol Rovers.

Other upsets included National League Altrincham and Eastleigh defeating League One Barnsley and Crewe respectively while National League Forest Green Rovers won at League Two Wimbledon.

Wembley was a distant dream when this season's FA Cup started way back in August with 184 ties in the extra preliminary round.

By the end of October, more than 30 non-League clubs had battled their way to the first round proper including eighth-tier teams Northwich Victoria and Didcot Town.

The qualifying rounds were full of weird and wonderful stories. There was the tie that had to be moved because of a cheese show, the player who grew up playing alongside Philipp Lahm at Bayern Munich.

Then there was the team that had to catch an early morning flight before boarding a coach to make it to a tie in London.
