The replay was played at Wembley again five days later.

United manager Alex Ferguson ditched Scottish keeper Jim Leighton and played Les Sealey, who was on loan from Luton Town.

Sealey kept Palace's attack at bay with good saves, and defender Lee Martin became the unlikely hero when he scored the only goal of the match in the 59th minute.

    Palace striker Ian Wright:

"For the replay I thought 'OK, we have another crack at them on Thursday', but you do not get a second chance to beat a team of that stature.

"We did not perform and that was quiet sad. I didn't start that game either. I heard that if I was able to start both those games then England manager Bobby Robson would have taken me to Italia '90.

"Once they went 1-0 up we had the feeling it would be a lot more difficult to try to come back."

Ben Pollendine: Why don't they do joint interviews anymore?

Jack Redhead: The idea of a Cup Final going to a replay is just bizarre. Can't believe it lasted for so long.

Harry Patches: Forget how good a player Mark Hughes was. And Utd wouldn't have won all the titles after if they stuck with Jim Leighton!

Look at this! The two teams' managers and players being interviewed together.

    Did you both enjoy it?

    Mark Hughes: "Well yeah..."

Ian Wright: "Obviously we would like to have won..."

Alex Ferguson: "We ended with all sorts of players out of position. It was a manager's nightmare but they kept going."

Steve Coppell: "Ian is a match-winner and that's why he was there. He wasn't 100% but showed what he can do."

"And so the FA Cup final of 1990 ends in a draw. Alex Ferguson's team saved themselves in extra-time. Palace were 1-0 up, 2-1 down and 3-2 up. A stirring, gripping encounter."

Two-goal hero Ian Wright: "For them to score seven minutes from time was hard to take. I believed we deserved to win that on how we played on the day.

"We had them. It was a time when Alex Ferguson was under immense pressure. They would have sacked him if United had not won the cup. All the last 20 years would not have happened, but they made it 3-3."

Palace were only seven minutes away from winning their first major trophy.

But then up popped Hughes, who looked as spritely as he did in the first minute, to scupper their hopes.

It was Wallace again at the heart of it. The former Southampton player delivered a carefully-weighted pass and Hughes had enough power in his low shot to beat Martyn.

The goal that gave Palace the lead in extra-time was just as exceptional as the second.

This time it was youngster John Salako who brilliantly found the fast-arriving Wright at the far post with a cross from the left wing.

The striker kept his eyes on the ball, not the post in front of him, and volleyed in.
