Twenty years after winning promotion from the fourth tier via the play-offs under Neil Warnock, Plymouth Argyle are back at Wembley hoping to repeat the feat.

The Pilgrims edged past Portsmouth in their semi-final - a feisty 2-2 draw at Fratton Park was followed by a nervy second leg at Home Park, which Plymouth won 1-0 with a stoppage-time header from Peter Hartley.

Wimbledon's play-off semi-final win had almost everything - late goals, wonder goals, extra-time goals, even a floodlight failure.

Having won the first game 1-0 at home, the Dons fell behind on aggregate in the second leg in Lancashire.

But Adebayo Akinfenwa sent the tie into extra-time and Lyle Taylor secured Wimbledon's place at Wembley.

In the 11 previous meetings between these two, the home side has never won.

And today AFC Wimbledon are deemed the home team.

Those of you who are superstitious may also have noted that Plymouth have the East Stand today - also occupied by winners Hull City and Barnsley so far this weekend.

This is the fourth meeting between these two sides this season, and the Devon club have the upper hand so far.

Way back on the opening day of the season on 8 August, Plymouth won 2-0 at Kingsmeadow.

That was followed by a 3-2 away win for Plymouth over the Dons in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, before Wimbledon won 2-1 at Home Park in April to make their 2015-16 head-to-head record 2-1 to the Pilgrims.

AFC Wimbledon will reach the third tier for the first time in their 14-year history if they win today's game.

And promotion would be another fascinating chapter in the story of the Dons - and would set up third-tier league matches against Milton Keynes Dons.

Sunday's League One play-off final saw Barnsley beat Millwall 3-1 and complete a remarkable turnaround in their season.

The Tykes had been bottom of the table in December but improved significantly after Christmas and won the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in April.

And goals from Ashley Fletcher, Adam Hammill and Lloyd Isgrove saw them past Neil Harris' battling Millwall at Wembley to clinch promotion.

The Football League play-off finals began with a tense affair between Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, settled by a superb goal from the Tigers' Mohamed Diame.

The Senegal international's curling shot from outside the box was enough to earn Steve Bruce's side an immediate return to the Premier League after relegation last season.

Defeat means that Sheffield Wednesday, who had finished sixth in the table, will spend a 17th year outside the top flight.

Plymouth were victorious in their only previous visit to Wembley, back in 1996.

Then managed by Neil Warnock, Argyle beat Darlington 1-0 with a goal from Ronnie Mauge to win the fourth-tier play-off final.

Last season's League Two play-off final between Southend and Wycombe was short on excitement until extra-time, when it sparked into life.

Wanderers led until the 122nd minute, when Joe Pigott netted a last-gasp equaliser to send the tie to penalties.
