Even Paul Young gets a huge cheer. The 80s heartthrob is singing the national anthem. He’s also wearing an ‘ecru’ suit. The Liverpool Spice Boys have a lot to answer for.

Germany’s anthem, in the balance of interest, is sung by Anna-Maria Kaufmann. She’s one of Germany most popular and versatile artistes says our Bazza Davies. Of course, you already know that.

About 75,000 people are absolutely buzzing to be sat under the shadows of Wembley's Twin Towers. One is wearing the expression of a bloke who has just dropped his expensively-priced £2 hot dog on the floor.

Young England full-back Gary Neville will be kicking every ball from the posh seats as he misses out through suspension. Cheer up Gary, sure you'll play in plenty of tournament semi-finals over the next decade or so...

Germany make two changes from their quarter-final win over Croatia, both enforced. Fredi Bobic is out of the tournament through injury and Jurgen Klinsmann is ruled out of today's game with a knock. A team spokesman says he has a "0.5% chance", external of playing in the final if Germany win.

Stefan Kuntz starts up front on his own, while Steffen Freund also comes into the team. Mehmet Scholl keeps out Thomas Hassler in midfield.

Plenty of kids singing along to 'You'll Never Walk Alone' which is almost boomed out by the Wembley crowd. Spinetingling stuff. The players will be hearing that as they emerge from their changing rooms. About 10 minutes to kick-off...

Paul Ince returns after a one-match suspension and takes the place of Gary Neville, who starts a one-game ban himself. The Manchester United right-back should be back for the final though.

Our graphic reckons David Platt will start at right-back. Platt?? Right-back?? I'm not having that. All will be revealed in the next few minutes...

    Jimmy Hill
    BBC Sport pundit

“David Platt played very well in the last game until he tired later on, so I see no reason for Terry Venables to drop him.

“I’m trying to look for reasons why England might win – really it is 50/50. You could toss a coin.

“Sheringham and Shearer, our predators are on form. Theirs - Jurgen Klinsmann - is sitting on the touchline. One good reason to give us heart before kick-off but we’re praying!”

Not a great managerial CV to be taking on the top job, I'd respectfully suggest. How do you think he'll get on?

Not bad that Ziege. Good left peg, gets up and down the flank. Reckon he could do a job in the Premier League one day.

“I think England can win the game. But they have to be balanced. Attack at the right times and make sure they’re solid defensively.

“Watch out for Christian Ziege down the left flank and Matthias Sammer when he comes forward into the middle of the park. He has to be picked up.”
