“I agree with Ruud, I think it is a question of patience. In my mind is the old quick step - slow, slow, quick, slow - we are going quick, quick too soon. Still too hasty.”

    Goal of the tournament

Remember not to ring in for your favourite goal of Euro 96... *insert sticks tongue out emoji*

Although I could I reckon I'd go for Gazza against Scotland.

    Germany 1-1 England

    Ruud Gullit
Chelsea midfielder and former Netherlands captain at Wembley

“I don't think England have to change too much. They are in the game and have to be more patient, pass the ball. There will always be a chance. They proved that in the first half.”

England have Steve McManaman on the left wing, to the annoyance of Jimmy Hill, but as you can see from this Opta graphic, they have done exactly twice as much of their attacking on the right in the first half.

    Alan Hansen
    Former Scotland and Liverpool defender

“Ziege runs out and gets too far in front of Adams. No problem for Shearer. The space between the two defenders… Adams takes a step back, no problem Shearer comes in…wheres the marking? Easiest goal you’ll ever see.

“England will be unhappy. There are a lot of men behind the ball. They’re sleeping at the back post and Kuntz comes in between two defenders. And it’s the easiest chance in the world.”

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:14 British Summer Time 8 June 2016

    Germany 1-1 England

Hansen is raging about the defending for both goals. England scored the “easiest goal you’ll ever see” and Germany scored from the “easiest chance in the world”. Maybe he’ll mellow in older age…

England have done most of the attacking in the opening 45 minutes, although Germany have edged possession.

    Germany 1-1 England

    Jimmy Hill
    BBC Sport pundit

"I’m concerned about England going forward down the left. I haven’t seen a left-foot cross in any of the matches that has been half decent, particularly with McManaman down there. That’s stubborness that Terry Venables sticks with that formation.

“But on the good side Terry has got passion into that team. Some of those tackles out there have been frightening. Fortunately they have got the ball.

“But I think that passion is interfering with their thinking and calmness when it comes to being in possession.”

  9. Postpublished at 20:12 British Summer Time 8 June 2016

    Germany 1-1 England

    Alan Hansen
    Former Scotland and Liverpool defender

“I thought Germany had better control of the ball, but England had better opportunities in the final third of the pitch. Time and time again if their crossing been better and there was more composure around the box, England could have scored another couple of goals.”

  10. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:10

    Germany 1-1 England

    Ruud Gullit
Chelsea midfielder and former Netherlands captain at Wembley

“I don’t like to score to early in the game because what happens is you give the opponent a boost because they have to come back. After a while the Germans got the ball, worked it out and Wembley was quiet.”

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 8 June 2016

    Germany 1-1 England

Ref Sandor Puhl toots his half-time whistle. Time for a half-time orange and some words of wisdom from Mr Venables and Herr Vogts.

England started the better, but didn't really build on that early goal which rocked the Germans.

How are you all feeling? Let's hear what the lads in the studio think...

Pitt The Blogger: Gazza is making FA Cup 1991 style tackles... It looks like he's trying to decapitate people

Matt Williams: Gazza would've been sent off about 4 times by today's referees with those lunges

Ticking along towards half-time, into the final minute. Breathless stuff.

“Excellent cross by Anderton, I don’t think Kopke would have got to the header. Shearer is very frustrated.”

So close! England test the Germans for the first time in a while. Darren Anderton has been a menace down that right flank and his pinpoint delivery is met by Alan Shearer's thumping header. But the tournament's leading scorer flashes his effort past the post. Encouraging signs though as we head towards the break...

Laura: It seems the German was trying to keep Pearce's foot in the tackle to make more of that! Good refereeing

    Barry Davies

“The referee wants to talk to Pearce, and one or two Germans want to talk to Pearce. He came in strongly, but his eyes were on the ball. The referee sees it that way too.”

Ooof! A meaty challenge from Stuart Pearce almost lands him in bother. He clatters into Stefan Reuter close to the right touchline and is immediately surrounded by German players. Ref Sandor Puhl tells him to cool it.

Was living in NY, had the previous weds afternoon off to watch Eng vs Holland so no more time off. Got my boss to tape the game, yes tape, but couldn't collect tape until next morning. Had a few "Brian Glover" moments before I could settle down the next evening.

England are struggling a little, I'd suggest. Not much penetration.
