“I think that is the furthest forward Eilts has been in the whole tournament. Whether his team-mate just got in his way I don’t know but I would have expected Helmer to get it target. Nervous moment for England.”

Anxious moment for England! El Tel's men drop off for a moment, allowing Dieter Eilts - one of the stars of this tournament - to venture down the left. His pullback finds Thomas Helmer (him again) who arcs a rising shot over the crossbar. Warning sign.

The mood of England fans is varying between confident, nervous and everywhere inbetween. Many chant 'Eng-er-land' to raise the tempo, while one bloke sparks up a cig before pecking his missus on the cheek. He's chilled.

“Ince is having to do more of the anchor role this evening. I thought Paul Gascoigne would be further forward than he has been, he’s doing a lot of his work very deep. He’s not going into the attacking third, taking defenders on where he could hurt the Germans.”

England's midfield is starting to dominate now. Paul Ince picks up the ball from Teddy Sheringham, driving forward from the halfway line. The white shirts scatter like they have been blown off the washing line by a gusty wind, allowing Ince to drive one from distance. The ball whistles over the bar, Ince grimaces.

Sat here watching the game for first time on TV, brings back lots of memories of the day, what a day! remember getting the ball a few times, was behind goal tunnel end, old man didn't have a ticket and waited outside the whole day and drove us home afterwards, now 35 was 15 then!

"Good to see him starting to run at defenders because he hasn’t done that up to now.”

There you go Jimmy…a left-foot cross from McManaman. Our man Hill wasn't happy at half-time that the England winger wasn't supplying enough. But the Liverpool player wriggles into space here, although his floated cross goes straight into the grateful grasp of Andreas Kopke.

England have made a good start to this second half. Germany have plenty of men behind the ball, forming a wall of white which England are trying desperately to punch a hole through.

Paul Ince is let off the leash and bursts forward but David Platt's intended pass is blocked by a German defender. Wembley reckons it is handball, the ref doesn't.

Tony Adams has been as solid as a rock tonight. The England skipper uses his noggin to glide over to the left flank and cut out a probing German ball. He's on a booking remember.

Heartbreak for Stefan Reuter. Or should I say potential heartbreak. He looks to the heavens after being booked inside the opening 40 seconds of the second half. That means he misses the final if Germany get there. Huge cheers from the England fans. Merciless.

I bet Gazza is feeling a tiny bit of sympathy...

“This is the seventh meeting in a championship between these two countries. Germany two to one. England, of course, here in 1966. What now? Is it to end as dramatically as Turin 1990?”

Nah, don't worry Barry. This will be done inside 90 minutes tonight.

    Former Scotland and Liverpool defender

"England have got a great chance to win this game. All they have to do is give it 100% concentration when they haven’t got the ball. If the Germans have got a weakness it’s defending against hard and high. Just bung it in and let Shearer get on the end of it.”
