"Do you also wear the sweatpants at home?" the paper asks.  "No, never in private," Kiraly explains. "I wear jeans but I work with grey sweatpants. For me it's funny when people wear jogging pants on the road."

  3. The most famous tracksuit bottoms in football, maybe in the worldpublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 14 June 2016

    Austria v Hungary (17:00 BST)

Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, now at Szombathelyi Haladas in his homeland, is famed for wearing grey tracksuit bottoms.

The 40-year-old told BBC World Service: "It started 20 years ago in Hungary and they brought me luck. I took them to Hertha Berlin and it brought luck as well as we were in the Champions League. After that I took it to Crystal Palace.

"I want to be confident in the game. I want to work and I can only do this in these grey bottoms.

"In the beginning they were black. The kitman didn't wash them on the Friday and on Saturday we had a game. I had no other bottoms so I took the grey ones and that was the start of the luck.

"I've played 20 years in these bottoms for Hungary and I don't think I'll be changing."

I've seen a lot of people tip Austria as dark horses without really expanding on what that means.

They are ranked 10th in the world and won 90% of their qualifiers.

Do people think they are contenders to win the whole tournament? Or would the quarter-finals be a good achievement?

    Austria v Hungary (17:00 BST)

Austria start with David Alaba in central midfield, as they did throughout qualifying. The 23-year-old plays at left-back usually for Bayern Munich.

The favourites for this game are captained by Leicester's title-winning defender Christian Fuchs and Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic also starts. Martin Hinteregger gets the nod to partner the highly rated Aleksandr Dragovic in central defence.

Hungary are short on household names. Goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly becomes the first 40-year-old to ever play at a European Championship.

One to keep an eye on is Balazs Dzsudzsak, who created 24 chances for his country in qualifying - 16 more than any other Hungarian player. Former West Brom midfielder Zoltan Gera also starts - in a more withdrawn role to his Premier League days. He's 37 now.

    Portugal v Iceland (20:00 BST)

After Austria face Hungary, we will see the final game of 'matchday one' as the other two sides in this group meet - Portugal v Iceland (20:00 BST).

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is the favourite to win the Golden Boot - largely because of what appears to be a favourable group. Iceland, making their debut in a major tournament, are the smallest country by population ever to reach a European Championship.

That's a record unlikely to ever get broken, because there are only five countries in Uefa with a population lower than their 330,000 mark - Andorra, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.

Both teams have named their line-ups. We'll bring you the full team news soon but here's the headline...

Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly becomes the oldest man to ever play at a European Championship today.

Germany sweeper Lothar Matthaus was 39 years and 91 days when he played at Euro 2000. Kiraly is almost a year older, being 74 days past his 40th birthday.

  9. How Hungary qualifiedpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 14 June 2016

    Austria v Hungary (17:00 BST)

Hungary's qualification was much less glamorous. They finished third in a group behind Northern Ireland and Romania, using three managers in the process. They won only four of their 10 games, ending with a positive goal difference of two. However they went on to beat Norway 3-1 in the play-offs.

Austria reached this tournament in pretty sensational fashion. They won nine and drew the other in their 10 qualifying games, finishing an impressive eight points above Russia, who drew with England on Saturday, and 10 clear of Sweden, who drew with the Republic of Ireland yesterday.

Austria and Hungary have history. A lot of history.

From 1526 to 1918 the two countries were combined, first in the Habsburg Monarchy, then the Austrian Empire and then the Austro-Hungarian Empire.*

Much like the decline of that empire, both country's football teams have struggled in recent years.**

But now they are back at the top table of international football.***

*The history of European borders is never straightforward so no need to tweet us to tell us the many reasons some of these facts might be simplified/disputed.

**No need to tell us that the declines are not that similar really.

***Unlike the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which isn't going to come back.
