Tottenham goalscorer Danny Rose speaking to Sky Sports: “A draw was probably the fair result. In the first half Michel Vorm was probably our man of match, he made great saves but I thought we played a lot better in the second half.

“For the goal I took a gamble but didn’t want to go forward too much because the pace of Mane is frightening. I think I shanked it but it went in and they all count.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Match of the Day: "When you take a point at Tottenham for 99 per cent of teams it would be a good thing but today we saw the game different.

"We played a very good away game against a very strong side. It was our first real mistake and it was a goal so that is not really fair.

"We showed we can be good. We played football and defended really good. It doesn’t feel too brilliant at the moment.

On the penalty incident involving Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen: "If the referee waits one second then it is 100 per cent a penalty, do we have to make the corner quicker?

"Ask him what the rules are. We go there (to Burnley) and it is a penalty and today not. I have no idea what is right. I would prefer he said nothing and watched the situation and then it is penalty."

So, is that about par for both teams so far this season?

Tottenham have taken a win and two draws from Everton (a), Crystal Palace (h) and Liverpool (h).

Liverpool have four points from trips to Arsenal, Burnley and Tottenham.

Next up for Tottenham is an away game against Stoke on 10 September. Liverpool play Leicester at home on the same day,

  5. "A tough start to the season"published at 14:34 British Summer Time 27 August 2016

Liverpool left-back James Milner: "Ultimately we are disappointed. We didn’t do enough in the second half so it was probably a fair result in the end. We deserved to be in front but in the second half we didn’t come out on the front foot after getting the goal.

On playing as a make-shift left-back: "You have got to learn quickly. Fortunately I have played in the Premier League long enough to have enough experience. I have played in enough positions throughout my career, I just have to adapt to position

"It seems a long time since we played at Anfield, it has been a tough start.

"We have four points and probably should have had more but the performances are not far off the level we need. As long as we keep performing I am sure more results will come."

It was end-to-end stuff at the end. There's a great deal of respect for each other. It seems every time they play each other you can't pick a winner and I think it's a fair result.

It's still early season and all credit to the players. You're left wanting more you didn't want the game to end.
