    Tottenham 0-1 Liverpool

Tottenham finish the half pressing a Liverpool defence that has looked decidedly wobbly.

They are still very much in this.

A big team-talk coming up from messrs Pochettino and Klopp.

Sadio Mane - who has been a constant menace - very nearly picks out Roberto Firmino with a raking cross-field pass.

Only a hurried intervention from Jan Vertonghen prevents the Brazilian getting in on goal.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 13:16 British Summer Time 27 August 2016

Paul Walmsley: From a Liverpool fan - one of the softest penalties you'll ever see.

lfcway: You Can always depend on Milner! Get in! Deserved lead for #LFC

Richard: That's incredibly unfortunate. Lamela accidentally and barely touches Firmino. I really wish that wasn't considered a foul.

A good time to score then.

Certainly the atmosphere at White Hart Lane has punctured like a balloon on a holly bush.

There can't be any complaints there with the penalty. I wondered if Michel Vorm would save it because he's been outstanding but that's a great penalty by James Milner, tucking it into the corner. Liverpool aren't over-celebrating because they know there's a lot of work to do.

No mistake, no drama from Liverpool's Mr Dependable.

He buries the spot-kick. You had more faith in him doing so than you would have had it been Liverpool's second-choice left-back.

A promising break for Tottenham as Erik Lamela gets a lucky break off Jordan Henderson and looks up to see options to his left and right and an under-staffed Liverpool back line.

He telegraphs a pass though and Joel Matip reads it like a book, stepping up and cutting it out.

Spurs fans want a second yellow for Sadio Mane.

The Liverpool man - who has been buzzing around like a battery bunny - charges into Danny Rose as the Tottenham full-back thumps clear.

Mane holds up his hands in apology and it looked more over-enthusiastic than malicious.

Bobby Madley holds fire, issuing just a stern warning.

Phil Vieira: How is that not a penalty? Why does Vertoghen get a warning? Terrible Referring!

Gee Em: How on earth is that not a penalty against Spurs?!

Kevin Logan: So are we going to have another season of pulling in the box being only occasionally punished? The consistency is the problem

  13. YELLOW CARDpublished at 34 mins

Sadio Mane lunges to try and recover Joel Matip's wayward pass and gets only Dele Alli.

I'm not sure Vincent Janssen was going to get to that ball. I think the referee has just about made the right decision but if I'm Joel Matip I'm not going to be holding on any time soon.

  15. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 33 mins

    Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

Are we sure Joel Matip has not done a stint in the NBA?

The towering Liverpool defender stands his ground, blocking off Vincent Janssen as the Dutchman attempts to spin in on goal.

Janssen goes down and appeals for the spot-kick. Bobby Madley is having none of it.

"Looking at a replay and there is definitely a foul on the Liverpool player by Jan Vertonghen. If that was Mike Dean last week it would probably have been a penalty. We are looking for consistency from referees.

"Jurgen Klopp is saying to the fourth official that the player was impeded, couldn't get to the ball and clearly it was a penalty."

Jurgen Klopp is chewing the fourth official's ear about referee Bobby Madley's failure to give a spot-kick for Jan Vertonghen's grab of Joel Matip's shirt.

Vertonghen was walking the tightrope certainly. You can understand why. Matip is NBA-level tall.

Liverpool are bristling with threats every time they come forward.

Michel Vorm comes flying out of goal again to beat Sadio Mane to a through-ball, Philippe Coutinho sees a shot deflected over the top and Jan Vertonghen is perhaps fortunate to escape with a grapple on Joel Matip from the following corner.
