Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was out way before his team at the start of the second half - he clearly did not feel he had to get too many messages through to his players.

And they have picked up where they left off, looking the livelier and more dangerous team. Spurs are struggling to find any spark.

Tottenham had a free-kick everyone goes up and on the counter-attack Liverpool were blistering. I don't believe that's off-side. If it's off, it's a fraction. It should favour the forwards.

Liverpool think they have doubled their lead as Sadio Mane side-foots home a volley at the far post.

But the whistle halts the celebrations.

Adam Lallana was a toecap offside as he dashed onto Georginio Wijnaldum's pass to supply the cross for Mane.

The Spurs defence was shredded on the break once again though.

Joel Matip is very unlucky there. It's just his height and presence, not any great movement, from a great ball in.

Joel Matip clambers highest, but can only glance his header over the top from six yards.

The ball smudged the bar on its way.

The Cameroon defender should have done better.

Jan Vertonghen is tested for pace by Sadio Mane as the pair chase a throughball and catches the Liverpool attacker with his arm.

It wasn't deliberate. It is a yellow card.

The Spurs fans insist that referee Madley doesn't know what he is doing.

Nick Hughes: I think we'll see Origi coming on for Mane soon, 10 mins at most before a change, better defender than Sturridge

Vieira151: Klopp, please take Mane off. Pretty please. Living dangerously.

Christian Eriksen takes a big swing with his right peg from 30 yards, but it is a dud connection and he shanks the ball well wide of the Liverpool goal.

Sadio Mane - on a yellow - is testing the patience of referee Bobby Madley.

He has long ago snapped the Tottenham fans' patience.

He blunders in on Danny Rose again. Several Tottenham players ask the question, but Madley decides to keep his cards in his pocket.

    No changes for either side.

Liverpool are out of the traps quicker though as Georginio Wijnaldum whips a shot narrowly over the top from 20 yards after Roberto Firmino picked him out with a clever, disguised ball.

As striking imports from the Eredivisie, is Vincent Janssen going to be a Ruud van Nistelrooy or Luis Suarez?

Or a Mateja Kezman? Or, perish the thought, an Alfonso Alves?

He scored an impressive 27 goals in 34 games for AZ last season, but has struggled to get into this game so far after his 28th-minute introduction as a sub.

  17. Liverpool's deserved leadpublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 27 August 2016

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Liverpool's lead is narrow but deserved. They have had the better chances and have frustrated Spurs' attempts to create chances of their own.

Mauricio Pochettino has cut an increasingly agitated figure. Liverpool have not been giving the home side any time and the Spurs boss needs to put that right.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, will be a very satisfied man.

James Milner did more than just stick away a penalty in that half. He's worked hard and has had more touches of the ball (48) than any other player on the pitch.

Daniel Kelly: Fully deserved lead, just exactly what we needed before the break! Just need to take more chances we create!

Parth Mehta: This game will finish with 20 men on the pitch
