    Sunderland 0-0 Everton

Gareth Barry, closing in on Frank Lampard's place in second on the all-time Premier League appearances list, gives away a cheap free-kick to curtail an Everton attack. David Moyes, almost against his own instincts, is out on the touchline urging Sunderland higher up the pitch.

Patrick van Aanholt is in some distress. Bolasie is away from him but he gets a tackle in. I'm not sure if Bolasie stands on him or he pulls a hamstring or something.

Kevin Mirallas has a shot blocked after an extended spell of play down the Everton right, before ref Mike Jones stops the game so Patrick van Aanholt can receive some treatment. The dynamic Dutchman hurt himself challenging Yannick Bolasie. But he's OK.

We could do with a goal but at the same time I'm enjoying it. Both sides will be fairly happy so far. Everton look comfy in possession but when Sunderland go forward they look a threat.

    Sunderland 0-0 Everton

Just over half-way through the opening half and you'd have to say that Everton (right) have used the wide areas more effectively than Sunderland.

    Sunderland 0-0 Everton

Jan Kirchhoff made the not very oft-travelled road from Bayern Munich to Sunderland last January and played a big part in their recovery under Big Sam. He'd be some 5-a-side player I reckon. A massive unit who plays pretty much at walking pace, just popping the ball about one and two touch. He's a growing influence but ends up chopping down Yannick Bolasie on the edge of the Everton box. Just a talking to from ref Mike Jones.

A quarter of the way through the game. Good tempo, a good chance each. But that's about it. Just needs to be lifted a touch. A mistake, a bit of class...

Yannick Bolasie is obviously under instruction to put crosses in early from the right wing, he flashes in another one from deep and it's well headed away from in front of Ross Barkley. Everton are making Sunderland's defenders work though.

It's been a good game with chances at both ends. Sunderland kept that last attack going and Duncan Watmore was a bit unlucky with the header.

Romelu Lukaku tries to roll Papy Djilobodji on the edge of the box, two massive men locked in a struggle, and they both go to ground. Lukaku still manages to hook in a shot on goal but it's tame and easy for Jordan Pickford.

Si Banstead: Blimey that choked me up. Kudos for the fans of Sunderland and Everton for the minute's applause for young Bradley Lowrey.

Mathias Enell: Jan Kirchhoff was Sunderland's best player with Jermain Defoe after he came in last season. If they perform then Sunderland can stay up.

  13. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 16 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Everton

A very half-hearted penalty appeal as Lynden Gooch goes down inside the penalty area. Not one of the household names on display, but the 20-year-old from Santa Cruz has looked decent so far.

Adnan Januzaj then finds Jack Rodwell for a shot from range which is well blocked.

    You're not wrong...

Tom - you've mentioned a couple of times how Lukaku's goal drought must surely end tonight.. any chance you have him in your fantasy team?

Yannick Bolasie has started really well, he is carrying Everton up the pitch every time he gets on the ball.

He was expensive - but who isn't now? - but he's a real threat.

Terrific football. It's a great ball in and Romelu Lukaku should score, but what a save.

  17. GREAT SAVE!published at 12 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Everton

    Brilliant save!

Romelu Lukaku is free on the six-yard line to meet a Yannick Bolasie cross, he heads it pretty much straight at Jordan Pickford but at that range, and at that speed, the keeper still did incredibly well to turn it away.

An excellent save. Could easily be 1-1 now.

Jermain Defoe is as sharp as a tack. He just sniffs a chance, it's magical forward play. He should have done better, he should have scored but he is a striker whose only thought is trying to get a finish away.

  19. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Everton

First chance of the night! Jermain Defoe's movement and anticipation is superb as he stretches to reach a deflected shot into his path, he's maybe eight yards out, left foot - and he shins it over the top!

Defoe looks longingly at the linesman, almost hoping for a flag. None is forthcoming. Defoe winces.

Will he get a better chance than that?
