Better by Arsenal, who break dangerously but cannot quite find the final ball, with Mesut Ozil over-hitting one pass and Nacho Monreal seeing a cross-shot deflected over.

    Arsenal 0-1 Southampton

Arsenal threaten at last, with their first effort at goal after 25 minutes. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wins a free-kick by the left-hand corner flag, Santi Cazorla whips it in and Theo Walcott heads over at the near post. It wasn't particularly close, but it is the best yet from the Gunners.

    Arsenal 0-1 Southampton

This has been very lethargic from Arsenal and they have not improved since going behind. Saints are shading possession, with 53%, as well as having the lead.

Arsenal have laboured and on the balance of play Saints deserve the lead.

It's so unlucky because that was a world-class save from Petr Cech!

Disaster for Arsenal, and Petr Cech. Delight for Saints.

Dusan Tadic takes the free-kick and clips it over the wall. Cech claws it on to the underside of the bar, but it bounces down and hits the keeper, who diverts it back over the line.

Danger for Arsenal here as Nathan Redmond picks up the ball on the edge of the area. Hector Bellerin lunges in with a desperate challenge to try to cover, and gives away the free-kick. He gets a booking too.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

Here's a move that sums up the first 15 minutes for Arsenal. They move the ball around patiently before finding Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left. He looks up, and bends a cross straight out of play.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

All very low-key from Arsenal so far. Saints continue to show more urgency when they attack.

Southampton are looking to capitalise on an Arsenal side who look a little asleep.

Saints look a little bit quicker all around the field - when they are in possession they are composed and always looking to create opportunities. It's a bright start by the away side.

Hmmm, I'm not sure the high ball into the box will work for Arsenal today, with Lucas Perez up front. He is no Olivier Giroud, if you know what I mean. Saints look comfortable at the back so far - Arsenal are passing the ball sideways nicely enough but threaten a lot less when they play it forwards.

  12. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

Saints look most dangerous when they break, especially when Dusan Tadic is on the ball, but they are also struggling to find any fluency with their passing when they come forward. The rain is getting heavier again, which probably doesn't help.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southamptpn

Arsenal keep on giving the ball away in their own half, and are not making much impression when they come forward either. No massive cause for alarm just yet, obviously, but definitely room for improvement.

    Arsenal 0-0 Southampton

New Gunners defender Shkodran Mustafi has shown a couple of tidy touches, and won one routine header but also almost gave the ball away in his own half. Looks like he will fit in nicely then...

Saints have come forward down the left a couple of times already, and this time play a crossfield ball that finds Dusan Tadic charging into the area to get on the end of it. The flag is up for offside however, so that's the end of that.

The rain has eased a bit in north London. Saints are spraying the ball around at the back.

The Gunners get things going. They are eight points behind leaders Manchester City, although obviously this is their game in hand.
