Sunderland manager David Moyes speaking to BBC Sport: "We had to deal with Tottenham's pressure and chances. Some days the other team score and sometimes they don't and, because they didn't, we were still in the game.

"Steven Pienaar had a great chance and we probably need to score any chance we get.

"Jordan Pickford is going to be a very good keeper. He has a lot of work to do at the moment, more than I'd like him to get. He will get better. There are small things he can brush up on. Sometimes his kicking was too long and we couldn't get on the end of it but, overall, he has a real good future ahead of him. 

"We had a chance to clear the ball for the goal. That was a mistake and, of all the chances Tottenham got, that was a soft one and we gifted them that. 

"It is a big job. I know how much is going to get better. All we can do is keep getting on the training field and making it better and I enjoy doing that."

Sky Sports also asked David Moyes about the late withdrawal of defender Patrick van Aanholt: "For medical reasons we chose to withdraw Pat."

Sunderland manager David Moyes speaking to Sky Sports: "We had to hang on for a long time. I wanted us to play a lot better but Tottenham forced us to play like that. 

"Possibly, the best chance was Steven Pienaar's for us in the first half. It was a tough game for us. Tottenham had a lot of the ball.

"We got improvements (from the Everton defeat) as much as we kept in it. I still want to see better play when we have the ball and being more aggressive. It is still the start of a journey and a long way to go.

"The goal was a gift. Until then the boys had done well. That sort of lapse of concentration let us down today."

There were a few injuries for Spurs today - Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier both went off.

But the ankle injury for Harry Kane looked nasty and he left White Hart Lane on a stretcher.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino tells BBC Sport: "Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier are not a big issue - just cramps. Harry Kane twisted his ankle and now we need to know about the injury. We need to wait until tomorrow."

David Moyes is being a bit weird about the reason for Patrick van Aanholt being pulled from the team minutes before kick-off.

The Sunderland boss tells BBC Sport "it was a medical decision and that's all we're saying at the moment".

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino tells BBC Sport: "Sometimes it's difficult. In the end it was fair.

"We fought a lot and tried to score. I'm happy with the three points and it takes away the feeling from losing against Monaco.

"I want to create chances and play well - sometimes you need a lot of chances to score. Today we always tried to go forward. We feel disappointed because we created a lot of chances in the first half."

Where do Sunderland go from here?

They haven't won any of their last 24 Premier League matches played in August or September.

And it's the fourth consecutive season they've failed to win any of their opening five Premier League games.

So, are they just poor at the start of the season. Or are they just poor?

Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford speaking to Sky Sports: "It was disappointing, we had a lot of defending to do but Tottenham are a good side.

"We had a couple of chances in the first half and could have scored.

"It's not ideal to be too busy as a keeper but making saves is my job. I just felt up for it, I always do. A save is a save at the end of the day. 

"I had a good loan spell at Preston last season and that helped a lot."

Jordan Pickford made eight saves today and, Son Heung-min aside, was the best player on the pitch.

He also made more passes than any other Sunderland player (22).

First-choice number one at Sunderland, Vito Mannone, may struggle to get his place back when he returns from an elbow injury.

Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli speaking to Sky Sports: "We always look to bounce back after a defeat. The game against Monaco was a hard one to take. 

"Maybe we should have seen this game off sooner. We were dominating. We felt comfortable and felt we needed to be patient. We knew a chance would come and thankfully it did.

"It's a great bunch of boys here, everyone gets on well and looks to help each other on the pitch."

Mr Turner: Oh dear Sunderland. Seems that with only Pickford, Kone & Defoe able to play 90m without a card, discipline will be an issue too

At what cost has this come to Spurs though?

Striker Harry Kane has left White Hart Lane on a stretcher, after a nasty looking ankle injury.

And Eric Dier came off nursing a hamstring problem.

That's Tottenham up to third in the Premier League on 11 points, four points behind leaders Manchester City.

They're still unbeaten in the league and are quietly going about their business.

Sunderland remain winless and are just above bottom-of-the-table Stoke with one point.

1-0 just about sums the game up, Spurs didn't play that well and struggled to break down a resolute Sunderland side. How else can Sunderland play? I don't know when they are expected to win, how they will approach that. They will need to win games to stay up.

It's probably a bit too late for David Moyes to be asking for urgency.

The full-time whistle toots and Spurs have won a game 1-0 that they could have won by three or four or five or six.

Sunderland are not giving up on this. Jermain Defoe's eyes light up as he has a crack from 20 yards, but it's blocked.
