Ben Peterson: Man Utd seem toothless, weak and pretty poor all round. How can you spend hundreds of millions on players and be this average?

Troy Deeney's timing is great for the header but it's matched by David de Gea. He's pulled on to Eric Bailly and Antonio Valencia should come and help his central defender. Man United are not dealing with crosses - it's only really Chris Smalling who is willing to win balls in the air.

Are Watford going to rue these missed chances? Hmmm. Possibly. But the way Manchester United are playing they might get a few more. Mourinho's men look hungover from their trip to Rotterdam.

Chance number three goes begging for Watford. Right wing-back Darryl Janmaat swings in a teasing cross, up goes Troy Deeney. The Watford skipper heads goalwards, for a millisecond he thinks he has scored. David de Gea has other ideas. The Red Devils keeper flings himself to his left to push clear.

David de Gea should just let Chris Smalling deal with it. If Odion Ighalo takes his time he scores. What a let off for Manchester United.

Watford should be ahead. Panic stations in the Manchester United defence as David de Gea and Chris Smalling get themselves in an almighty muddle when they try to deal with Sebastian Prodl's hoof forward.

To me, to you. De Gea and Smalling go all Chuckle Brothers. De Gea palms the ball down to Odion Ighalo who must slot into an open net from 15 yards. He scuffs wide.

Chance! The first one of the match. And it falls to Watford centre-back Sebastian Prodl. He heads across the face of goal when he meets Jose Holebas' cross. Troy Deeney is lurking at the far post but can't reach it. Think Gazza at Euro 96.

Jose Holebas has got a touch of the Rory Delap's about him. Lobs the ball in from the touchline with the power of a javelin thrower. He doesn't use a towel though. Two long throws end in the same result - headed clearances by Marouane Fellaini's blond bonce.

Jose Holebas against Antonio Valencia is a good match-up. You often don't see patient defending like Holebas has just shown there to get the block in.

Antonio Valencia has become one of the first names on the Manchester United team-sheet under Jose Mourinho. The right-back ploughs forward as he does, looking to whip the ball into a packed penalty box from the bye-line. But Watford left wing-back Jose Holebas is too smart to be duped there.

Pretty even start. Paul Pogba seeing plenty of the ball - is today the day that the world's most expensive player finally shows us why he is worth £90m?

It's interesting to see Marcus Rashford's early touches of the ball. There's no nerves with this young man. We could be watching one of the great players, although it's early days in his career.

Luke Shaw has to be the oldest looking 21-year-old in football. He must have to shave three times a day. No hairy moment for the Manchester United left-back though, scampering back to dispossess Darryl Janmaat with a smart sliding tackle.

Decent start for Manchester United. The visitors win a free-kick about 40 yards out - up go the big lads from the back. Wayne Rooney whips in the set-piece, Chris Smalling meets the ball but heads well wide.
