That's what Charlie Austin is there for. He hasn't done a lot in this match but it's a great finish. He has a lot to do but the pace is on the cross from Ryan Bertrand and it's good movement. He hung out on the penalty spot and then done what he does best. It's a terrific finish.

That's five goals in Charlie Austin's last four appearances. Are you watching Sammy Lee?

    Yes. Yes you are.

He's barely touched the ball but that's why you play Charlie Austin! Whether it's in the Wessex Premier or the Premier League, he'll score goals when given the chance.

A nice move down the left sees Dusan Tadic find Ryan Bertrand overlapping, he cuts it back and Austin steps away from Angelo Ogbonna before steering into the corner with his left foot.

Simon Goodall: My goodness this match is dire.

Leigh Tuplin: West Ham apparently play recorded crowd noise through speakers. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know nothing will.

Graham Green: Contrast yesterday's stellar performance by Arsenal to this dross by Southampton and West Ham. A case of A+ to zzzz.

And this is why Chris Sutton is moaning (see 16:34 entry). Not one shot on target yet. This graphic shows how West Ham have missed the target with two efforts (red arrows) and had a shot blocked. Saints' only shot was Pierre-Emile Hojberg's (23) blocked shot.

Alan Green and Chris Sutton are both loving this game. West Ham's corner does cause a moment of panic as it is helped on at the near post, but there's nobody there to turn it in.

Simone Zaza is a handful in the air, it was his flick on.

The quality on show today has been really appalling. Especially in the final third.

Manuel Lanzini whacks a cross clean out of play when well placed. Virgil van Dijk then cuts out a decent cross from Cheikhou Kouyate.

The disagreement regarding sitting or standing continues. It appears West Ham fans have been told to sit down today by stewards.

Doesn't this happen at every game in the country, in every division? I don't really understand why this such a big story...

The fact that Charlie Austin isn't really looking to get in behind West Ham's backline shows Southampton's game plan. Someone is going to have break forward and support him at some point.

West Ham's main point of attack so far has been trying to hit Michail Antonio on the diagonal but Virgil van Dijk is winning everything.

In fact, fans of nice statistical analysis may want to know that the Dutchman has now made six headed clearances, as many as he has in any of his previous five league appearances this season (playing 90 minutes on each occasion).

The standard of football hasn't been great today folks. There's still time to change that, hopefully.

David Ljunggren: Two struggling teams playing dire football in a converted athletics stadium. Tell me again about the glamorous Premier League.

Martin MJ: Simone Zaza could do with a big game here. I know there's a bedding in period but he's been distinctly underwhelming so far.

Stevie Dobner: Have a lot of supporters come to the game dressed as white seats? Not sure the ground is 'packed to the rafters'.

Free-kick for West Ham, Dimitri Payet lines one up. This is a long way out though and he crosses, well, Southampton have two attempts at clearing and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is lucky to see his miscued clearance run to a black, not a claret, shirt.

Adam Hayes: Don't understand why West Ham fans are moaning - new stadium for free + chance for club to grow - would not have happened at Upton Park.

Steven F. Galloway: West Ham's pitch looks ridiculously narrow and congested.

JonCook5: Personally I'm looking forward to going to West Ham's new ground as an away supporter. I like to visit new stadiums whenever I can.

Zaza's trying to con the referee there. The officials have a hard enough job without the players trying to con them like that.
