  1. That's all folkspublished at 22:31 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

I'm off for a lie down. Thanks for your company on a mixed day for Scottish teams in Europe.

Aberdeen are left to fly the flag in the Europa League and will be at home to Slovenian side Maribor next week, the kind of team my dad would describe as "a crack outfit"...

Hibs can hold their heads up high after losing a penalty shoot-out in Copenhagen but Hearts will be scratching theirs and wondering how they managed to lose at home to a team from Malta.

    Good night.

  2. Lennon still smarting over first leg losspublished at 22:25 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

Manager Neil Lennon talking to BBC Radio Scotland

"I thought we were the better team over two legs. I'm proud and pleased with the players because they did exactly what we wanted them to.

"If it wasn't for some poor refereeing in the first leg there would have been no need for us to go into extra time tonight.

"Any luck going in this tie went against us but I can't speak highly enough of the team."

  3. 'Hearts will learn from loss'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

Head coach Robbie Nielson talking to BBC Radio Scotland

"We're devastated. It was a year's work to get here and we've let it slip.

"But this is a young team and they will learn."

  4. Penalty pain for Hibeespublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 21 July 2016

This is what it feels like to miss in a penalty shoot-out...

John McGinn was the only player not to score from the spot as Hibs were edged out by Brondby.

A sore one for sure, but the midfielder put in a great shift, like all of his team-mates.

Peter, Newlands: Where do you place the Hearts result tonight in the context of last week's Celtic result being the worst in Scottish football history? Maltese champs for Goodness sake.

Peter Flanagan: Every time we think Scottish football can't get any worse we're proved wrong. Another black night.

FT: Brondby 0-1 Hibernian (agg: 1-1) Brondby win 5-3 on pens

"There was a real spirit about Hibs," says BBC Sportsound pundit Craig Paterson. "The performance was great, so many positives. They matched Brondby in every aspect over two legs. If they can maintain this level of focus, they will be very hard to beat in the Championship."

Aberdeen only team left in Europa League

I'm starting to see double, having started this page back at 15:30 when we had hopes of three Scottish sides progressing.

After a drama packed evening, Aberdeen are the only team left standing.

Fans of the Edinburgh sides will be feeling blue but Hibs went down fighting against a team with good pedigree, winning away from home on the night only to lose out on penalties.

Hearts will be smarting after a limp display but it could all have been different if Prince Buaben had converted a first-half penalty.

    Hearts 1-2 Birkirkara

A chorus of boos from the frustrated home fans... Hearts are dumped out of Europe by Maltese opposition.

Conor Sammon's header with 27 minutes left raised hopes but two sucker-punches left them with a mountain to climb.

Just a third win from 24 European ties for the visitors.

Alas, Jamie Murray and every other Hibs fan is left gutted as Brondby convert all five of their spot kicks.

John McGinn is the unfortunate man to have missed.

Norgaard 2-0 - Laidlaw gets a hand on it but can't keep it out.

Hanlon 2-1 - Again the keeper gets a touch but it's hard enough to squeeze in.

Stuckler 3-1 - Good strike, right in the corner.

Holt 3-2 - Sends the keeper the wrong way.

Wilczek 4-2 - In off the post!

Boyle 4-3 - Very cool, bottom right corner.

    Agony for the Hibees...
