Hibs can hold their heads up high after losing a penalty shoot-out in Copenhagen but Hearts will be scratching theirs and wondering how they managed to lose at home to a team from Malta.

"I thought we were the better team over two legs. I'm proud and pleased with the players because they did exactly what we wanted them to. 

"If it wasn't for some poor refereeing in the first leg there would have been no need for us to go into extra time tonight.

John McGinn was the only player not to score from the spot as Hibs were edged out by Brondby.

A sore one for sure, but the midfielder put in a great shift, like all of his team-mates.

Peter, Newlands: Where do you place the Hearts result tonight in the context of last week's Celtic result being the worst in Scottish football history? Maltese champs for Goodness sake. 

Peter Flanagan: Every time we think Scottish football can't get any worse we're proved wrong. Another black night.

I'm starting to see double, having started this page back at 15:30 when we had hopes of three Scottish sides progressing.

Hearts will be smarting after a limp display but it could all have been different if Prince Buaben had converted a first-half penalty.

A chorus of boos from the frustrated home fans... Hearts are dumped out of Europe by Maltese opposition.

Conor Sammon's header with 27 minutes left raised hopes but two sucker-punches left them with a mountain to climb.

Just a third win from 24 European ties for the visitors.

We're into stoppage-time at Tynecastle and Hearts need two goals.

Hibs keeper Ross Laidlaw was very close to keeping out the first two Brondby penalties and the Danish side's fourth went in off the post. Fine margins and all that...

Alas, Jamie Murray and every other Hibs fan is left gutted as Brondby convert all five of their spot kicks.
