    Slovenia 0-0 England

A new England? Not so far. Gary Cahill squirts a shot wide from 20 yards with the aid of a deflection as the TV cameras pick out Wayne Rooney on the bench making some tactical style hand gestures. If those are even a thing.

    Slovakia 1-0 Scotland

There are signs that Scotland can get back into this one. James McArthur smashes a header over when well placed, and Matt Ritchie is finding space on the right.

David Thackeray: Rooney to come on and score the winner 85th minute, then we're back to square one. Southgate resigns because of criticism.

Andy: England: lump ball forward, stop, pass backwards, stop, pass backwards, stop, give ball away. Repeat.

England must not get sucked in to playing panicky football.

You want to keep playing sharp, it is just frantic at the moment, they are giving it away unnecessarily.

    Slovenia 0-0 England

Daniel Sturridge loses the ball and Slovenia counter, only to see John Stones step out and make a cracking interception on halfway. Great reading of the game by perhaps another future England skipper.

Jesse Lingard then gives the ball away again. Not happening up front just now for England.

    Germany 2-0 Northern Ireland

Shot on target! Jamie Ward drives into the penalty area after a strong run down the left but when it comes down to the crunch he was never convincing and his shot at Manuel Neuer is tame. Easy save.

Alex Robertson: Can I blame the fact we're wearing pink as the reason Scotland are losing? Gonna use it anyway.

Shirt colour has been blamed before, remember Manchester United's grey kits against Southampton in 1996?

    Boom, boom.

England look like they really need someone experienced in the middle to conduct the play. I have an idea in mind but I can't put my finger on who it is. Can anyone help me?

    Slovakia 1-0 Scotland

A good opening for Scotland as they respond to falling behind, Robert Snodgrass advances from the left but his final shot slides beyond the near post.

Better from Eric Dier as he really drives on from the halfway line, committing men and then finding Theo Walcott on the right, he leans back and fizzes a shot high and wide.

England need more composure, they need captain Jordan Henderson to get the troops together.

They are playing decent football but it is too deep, they need to start playing in the Slovenian half.

These are the sorts of game when Gareth Southgate says you have to be brave. When you are getting closed down and there is not much in front of you, when their defence is well organised.

The senior players need to keep wanting the ball.

    Slovenia 0-0 England

Eric Dier hasn't had the best start. He follows up his poor backpass a few minutes ago with a rash challenge after England gifted away possession and he goes into the book. Gareth Southgate is as animated as you'll see him on the sideline. Angry with his side, not the officials, I think.

A bit of controversy about this goal, it looked to be a clear foul on Scotland striker Steven Fletcher in the build-up.

Slovakia were lethal on the counter-attack.

Scotland feel they should have had a free-kick for a foul on Steven Fletcher but Slovakia break.

David Marshall saves from a towering header from Marek Hamsik but only manages to palm the ball into the centre of the penalty box where an unmarked Robert Mak hooks the ball into the roof of the net.

Much better from John Stones, he has learnt not to play at the wrong time and looked much better this season. Sometimes you have to defend properly by just clearing the ball.

    Sami Khedira

From a short corner, Mats Hummels outjumps the Northern Ireland defence and his header is nodded in by Sami Khedira from just a couple of yards out.

    Slovakia 0-0 Scotland

Steven Fletcher gets in behind the home defence to meet a deep ball from Robert Snodgrass but the Scotland striker makes a horrible mess of his header near the penalty spot, nodding well wide of the target.
