England win a free-kick and take it quickly, Daniel Sturridge has a shy at goal from wide on the right and it sails harmlessly wide. England in all red tonight.

Looking forward to England being brighter and sharper against better opposition than Malta.

Who knows, this could be a new start under a new manager and new beginnings without Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney has a massive bench coat on as he sidles up alongside Jamie Vardy in the dugout. He's having a laugh and a joke. He'll be hoping to have an effect from there.

  15. Rooney on the benchpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 11 October 2016

    Slovenia v England (19:45 BST)

Wayne Rooney has been used as a substitute on just nine occasions in 117 appearances for England, racking up 279 minutes - until now. But how has he got on?

Of Rooney's record 53 international goals, only one has come as a substitute - in May in a friendly against Australia.

Remember the game? Marcus Rashford became England's youngest goalscoring debutant before Rooney scored the winner.

    Pick that one out...

Only twice has Rooney's introduction from the bench coincided with a positive change in the result from the score when he was sent on: Serbia & Montenegro in 2003 when a 1-1 draw was turned into a 2-1 England win; Trinidad and Tobago in the 2006 World Cup when a 0-0 draw was turned into a 2-0 win.

  16. 'There are leaders who will emerge'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 11 October 2016

    Slovenia v England (19:45 BST)

England manager Gareth Southgate: "It has to be a collective, there are leaders who will emerge over the next couple of years in this team.

"Dier and Henderson are good athletic midfielders who can use the ball well and that is an area of the pitch which will be vital. We need to move the ball quickly."

Just over 15 minutes to go until kick-off in tonight's games. Can England pick up an away win? Will Scotland get their campaign back on track? And can Northern Ireland possibly stop Germany?

  18. From boy to manpublished at 19:25 British Summer Time 11 October 2016

    Slovenia v England (19:45 BST)

It is quite remarkable that Wayne Rooney will retire as the leading goalscorer in England's history, and the leading goalscorer in Manchester United's history, and yet still have his career seen as unfulfilled by some. By many, even.

But to understand that, you have to remember just how exciting he was as a teenager. At Euro 2004, for two weeks or so, he looked like he could just be England's missing link. The man to elevate them from a good side, to a great one.

"I don't remember anyone making such an impact on a tournament since Pele in the 1958 World Cup," said Sven at the time. Pele!

He had it all didn't he? Pace, strength, superb vision, touch, 20-yarders, volleys, headers.

The best England player of his generation?
