    England 3-0 Scotland

Gareth Southgate took a significant step towards being appointed England's full-time manager and intensified the pressure on Scotland counterpart Gordon Strachan in the process with a comfortable World Cup qualifying win at Wembley back in November.

Daniel Sturridge's stooping, instinctive header from Kyle Walker's driven cross put the hosts ahead after 24 minutes and Liverpool team-mate Adam Lallana did the same from Danny Rose's delivery five minutes after the break.

James Forrest and Robert Snodgrass missed opportunities for the visitors before Lallana added England's second - and Gary Cahill's 61st-minute header from Wayne Rooney's corner only increased Strachan's agony.

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Scotland midfielder John Collins on 5 live: "If Scotland lose the game but put in a spirited performance and play well then I think there is every chance that Gordon Strachan will keep his job. If we don't, then maybe he steps aside.

"He has got them playing good football but do we have the players? What has put pressure on Gordon is how well Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have done by reaching the Euros last summer.

"We have got a better squad than Northern Ireland and an equally good squad to Wales and the Republic of Ireland."

In Group C Northern Ireland are well placed for a run at the play-offs - they are in second place, five points behind Germany - and a win in Baku this afternoon would keep them in a hunt for a place in Russia.

Boss Michael O'Neill looks set to retain Liam Boyce and Josh Magennis as his strikers.

The duo impressed against New Zealand last weekend as Boyce scored his first international goal and O'Neill has hinted that they will start again.

Scotland's realistic ambition was to be runners up.

Improbable, but if they were to win today, they would be three points off that place. They produced the kind of performance they need in their previous game against Slovenia but the early part of the qualification process has been a disappointment.

Gordon Strachan has made no bones about that. What he has said, is despite the 3-0 scoreline at Wembley, he felt the performance was decent. He said the players did what they were asked to do.

He intends today to take the game into the spaces that England leave. If the players stay calm and remember what their jobs are, they have a chance. Strachan said to me yesterday, he will be deeply disappointed if they don't win this.

In decades past the hype would have been a good deal greater for this game - though it has had a higher profile in Scotland. There is a surfeit of football now, and an election this week of course.

It is a much more important game for Scotland.

Rob Chandler: I think Scotland vs England has been replaced as the most fierce international match by Brazil vs Argentina

Adam M: We should have a six nations style tournament for football every two years. Or is that too much footy for the millionaire footballers?

Police Scotland said extra security measures are in place ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier against England at Hampden Park.

An increased police presence is expected at the game to support the large numbers of fans and armed police will also be on duty.

"Understandably, since the tragic events in London and Manchester, people are more aware of the current threat to the UK from terrorism," said assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins.

"There is no intelligence to suggest that Scotland or indeed this football match or any other event is a target but we have reviewed all forthcoming events to ensure our policing plans are robust."

It was pointed out to Gareth Southgate that it's more than a year since Harry Kane scored for England.

And he came back with some facts:

“It's eight months since he played! And three other months were the summer...

"Look, for me, I played with Alan Shearer when he went through how long before Euro 96, and he ended up top scorer in the championships. Goals will come. It's a good moment for him, the way he finished the season.”

This is not a permanent appointment as England captain. Gareth Southgate was very keen to stress that they are developing a group of five or six leaders who can play that role for England.

It is interesting that Kane has been chosen as captain for this game - which is the hardest game in the group.
