It can go really quiet here at Hampden if things start to go wrong.

Scotland really won't want England to be able to have a nice quiet tippy-tappy game.

The thing to remember is that it is a more important game for Scotland.

Hampden may not have the mammoth capacity it once had but it still sounds loud enough to me as the teams come out. It looks magnificent too, a Saltire drawn out in fans mosaic.

'God Save The Queen' gets the full treatment too. Mammoth booing.

'Flower of Scotland' is then piped in. Ear-shattering volume.

Does this rivalry still matter? In there it does...

I really think set pieces are going to be a massive factor for England and I think Scotland may struggle to defend against this tall side.

The Scotland players are in the tunnel, laser stare from Scott Brown. Not a man whose pint I'd want to spill.

Here come England now after a lengthy delay, Harry Kane much more smiley.

    All set?

No disrespect - Celtic have been the dominant force in Scottish football - they could have given some teams a 10-goal head start and still beat them. Those Celtic players will have confidence and momentum, but they are up against a solid England side today.

You would hope the confidence of the Celtic players in that Scotland side will rub off on the players who don't play for them.

All set in Baku too of course - a win would give Northern Ireland some breathing space in second place in Group C.

Can they reach a World Cup? You bet.

Yes, that is Jake Livermore starting in the centre of midfield. Not an obvious selection maybe - until you sit down and try and think of an alternative.

For years England had the 'left-sided' problem. Do they now really struggle for central midfielders?

And no, I'm not counting Dele Alli or Ross Barkley, they can't play that deep.

Scotland fans knew they would miss Scott Brown when he took international retirement, because he is a driving force in this side.

He has played on with more injuries than any player I have ever known and he had every right to take a break. You have to ask yourself what you can do for your country as much as what your country can do for you.

You look at his age (31), form and fitness compare that to Wayne Rooney, (also 31) - Scott Brown is coming into his best only now.

Harry Kane scored seven goals in his last two Premier League games of the season. Seven!

Can he get up and running again for England today? He has five goals for his country, but none since May 2016.

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan on ITV: "It is a wonderful occasion, the players know all about it. I can't describe it to them until they get out there.

"You don't often get qualifiers against England. As the week has grown I have got more and more confident - the players have made me feel that way."

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Hampden Park

Not a huge amount of optimism to be found among Scotland fans before the game but the atmosphere is building now as kick-off time approaches.

England, sadly wearing a red kit rather than traditional white, have just received the expected welcome from Scotland's fans as they came out to warm up.

Today started very wet in Glasgow but the sun is shining now and conditions should be perfect.

Former Scotland midfielder John Collins on 5 live: "If Scotland want to get that second place in the group then victory is paramount. A draw is not good in a qualification context but against England it is a good result.

"It will be difficult but we have played very well in the last few games. 3-0 flattered England in the game at Wembley, both sides had three chances so we just need to take our chances."
