Good early signs from England with some attractive approach play - and some neat touches from Harry Winks that will help him settle on his debut.

  2. 'Slovenia look sharp'published at 17:09 British Summer Time 8 October 2017

    Slovenia 0-0 Scotland

Ex-Chelsea winger on 5 live Sport

Slovenia look fit, they look sharp and they certainly look stronger than Scotland.

Scotland just can't get a foothold into this game at the moment.

    Lithuania 0-0 England

England were so bad on Thursday that it would be hard for them to play any worse tonight, but the early signs are promising. Harry Kane shoots wide after a flowing move which saw Dele Ali and Marcus Rashford link up well. This system may be an improvement indeed.

It seems like an England back five, against two Lithuanian players. They need to push up the field, take them the other way.

  5. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Slovenia 0-0 Scotland

Cracking start, with Scotland looking edgy. Darren Fletcher is weak in the tackle and Tim Matavz hitting a shot from the edge of the area straight at Craig Gordon.

  6. CLOSE!published at 5 mins

    Lithuania 0-0 England

Almost a debut goal for Harry Maguire! He's free in front of goal to meet a cracking left-wing cross but he doesn't make any connection at all. I think a defender just got a touch on it.

  7. 'Lively start'published at 17:05 British Summer Time 8 October 2017

    Slovenia 0-0 Scotland

    Pat Nevin
Ex-Chelsea winger on 5 live Sport

This is not going to be dull!

The way Andy Robertson went down that line then was great. He tried to get the ball across and it has been a really lively start.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 4 mins

    Slovenia 0-0 Scotland

Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, playing right-back for Scotland, is in the book. Rash tackle.

  9. 'Slovenia surprised'published at 17:04 British Summer Time 8 October 2017

    Slovenia 0-0 Scotland

That corner was straight off the training ground. Slovenia were a little bit taken by surprise there but Leigh Griffiths just couldn't get his shot away.

  10. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Lithuania 0-0 England

England popping the ball around well, with John Stones in the centre of the back three and stepping out into midfield almost when in possession. Gareth Southgate himself had that role at Euro 96.

  11. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Slovenia 0-0 Scotland

First shot of the game comes as Josip Ilicic hits one straight at Craig Gordon before Leigh Griffiths gets into the penalty area for Scotland but his cross/shot is well blocked away.

  12. 'Like a charity game'published at 17:02 British Summer Time 8 October 2017

    Lithuania 0-0 England

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City and England defender on Radio 5 live sports extra

It feels like a charity game. At one end it is open-ended, with a couple of tents behind the goal. It is like a non-league ground. The weather has put a lot of people off. But it is a chance for a lot of players to make Gareth Southgate think they are worth taking to Russia.

  13. Postpublished at 1 min

    Lithuania 0-0 England

Lithuania win an early free-kick, plenty of noise considering the ground is tiny.

  14. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

    Slovenia 0-0 Scotland

    Away we go.

  15. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

And we are under way! A dank, damp early evening on an artificial pitch.

It was Dele Alli and Adam Lallana in behind Harry Kane in Dortmund where this system looked good for England. Not great news for a wide player, mind.

Gareth Southgate speaking to ITV: "We are playing three centre-backs who can keep the ball well. Harry Winks is a player we want on the ball.

"It is a bit early for him but it's a great opportunity to look at him and it's a good game to bring him into."
