If Gareth Southgate wants to take a look at some other options in his squad in the second half he has got Jermain Defoe, Jesse Lingard and Jordan Pickford on the bench.

Ian: Jordan Henderson range of passing: sideways, backwards, Hollywood.

Les: Cresswell must have a cloak of invisibility on. Despite being in space numerous times, he's ignored by his team.

Anonymous: With a dismal campaign so far, rather than test squad players doesn’t the first 11 need more playing time together? It’s the first 11 that will be relied upon in the finals.

  6. Unspectacular Englandpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 8 October 2017

    Lithuania 0-1 England

England are winning but there has been little to excite their rain-soaked travelling fans.

Yes, they have the lead but Lithuania have rarely been troubled apart from conceding Harry Kane's penalty.

Harry Winks has made a decent debut but this has been unimpressive again.

  7. Four ways for N Ireland to reach play-offspublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 8 October 2017

Norway v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

    John Southall
BBC Radio Five Live football reporter

You sense it’s going to take quite a combination of results for Northern Ireland not to make the play-offs next month. They’ll do it if:

    • Scotland fail to win against Slovenia.
    • They lose by one goal here in Oslo tonight.
    • The game between Wales and Republic of Ireland tomorrow night, external is drawn.
    • Or they get at least a point against Norway

Surely they’ll make it. It would be well deserved.

Poland still lead Montenegro 2-0 and that means, as it stands, they are comfortably heading to the World Cup.

That score is bad news for Denmark, who need Poland to lose as well as picking up a victory themselves against Romania.

    They are currently drawing 0-0.

Slovakia lead Malta by 1-0 which means Scotland must hang on to their victory to ensure they make the play-offs.

    Tense stuff!

    Danny Mills

Lithuania 0-1 England. Harry Kane penalty. That is all there is to say. My role here is to say why this is happening. But it has just been sideways passing, very ordinary, dull and not great to watch.

On the balance of play and chances created, Lithuania are very unfortunate that they are losing this game.

  14. GREAT SAVE!published at 45 mins

    Lithuania 0-1 England

Right on half time Jack Butland gets down well to make a smart save at the base of his post from a skidding shot by Fiodor Cemych. A goal-kick is given but I'm sure the Stoke keeper got a nick on that.

Yullaw: Rashford should be subbed at half time. His place is already booked for the plane to Russia. Give others a chance to impress.

David Nicholson Hirst: England players playing bad on purpose so to surprise everyone in Russia, very clever play.

Thomas Hollern: A soft penalty well taken but an otherwise training session performance so far in this game.

  18. 'Risk and reward'published at 17:42 British Summer Time 8 October 2017

    Lithuania 0-1 England

    Danny Mills

I want to see these players trying to earn a place on the plane. At the moment they are just trying not to do anything wrong. Sport is about risk and reward.

    Lithuania 0-1 England

There are about four or five England flags owned by Sunderland fans draped around the stadium. You have to spare a thought for those fans at the moment – watching the Black Cats and this England side!

Concerns over Marcus Rashford now as he is caught by a clean but hefty tackle on the edge of the area. It's a tough landing on a hard pitch but I think he's going to be OK.
