Does Pep Guardiola need to win the Champions League to be considered a success at Manchester City?

He won it twice in four seasons with Barcelona but could not add a third at Bayern Munich. He did win the Bundesliga title in each of his three seasons in Germany, but failure to win the European Cup means his reign wasn't considered an unqualified success.

So would Premier League triumph be enough for Guardiola to be a Manchester City hero? Or does he need Europe too?

Steaua Bucharest v Man City (19:45 BST)

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola names the same front six that started in the Premier League against Sunderland on Saturday, but makes two changes in defence.

Nicolas Otamendi and Pablo Zabaleta come in for full-backs Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna. Aleksandar Kolarov reverts to his more natural left-back position as a result.

Joe Hart is dropped once again, with Willy Caballero preferred in goal.

Former West Brom defender Gabriel Tamas starts for the hosts.

Man City XI: Caballero, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Silva, Nolito, Sterling, Aguero

Steaua Bucharest: Nita, Tamas, Hamroun, Stanciu, Muniru Sulley, Tosca, Golubovic, Momcilovic, Enache, Popa.

  5. Hart nears Man City exit door?published at 18:41 British Summer Time 16 August 2016

Joe Hart accepts his future lies away from Manchester City.

Regardless of manager Pep Guardiola’s decision to leave him on the bench tonight, Hart already knew he did not figure in the City manager’s long-term plans and that situation is unlikely to change.

It is understood City are trying to sign another goalkeeper, although as yet, no deal has been concluded.

Hart wants to preserve his status as England’s number one goalkeeper.

And whilst there has been no fall-out with Guardiola, neither is there any meaningful relationship between the pair.

Everton are known to be interested in Hart, who will weigh up his options before deciding the next stage in his career.

When Pep Guardiola agreed to become Manchester City boss on 1 February, they were second in the Premier League table, challenging to win the title.

But their form dipped after the announcement and they finished fourth, only goal difference keeping them out of the Europa League places.

So for the first time since Guardiola's first two games as a top-level manager, he takes charge of a Champions League qualifier.
