  1. Celtic in good shapepublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

    FT: FC Astana 1-1 Celtic

Well they rode their luck at times but Celtic come away from Kazakhstan with a very credible 1-1 draw, which sets them up nicely for the second leg at Celtic Park next Wednesday. Astana passed up plenty of chances and Brendan Rodgers knows they are more than capable of scoring at Parkhead next week, but the Celtic boss is pleased with what he called "an outstanding result" today. Celtic may well be able to call on new signing Kolo Toure for the second leg, though 20-year-old Eoghan O'Connell did not look out of place playing at the back in Kazakhstan.

  2. 'Roberts was brilliant'published at 17:25 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

    FT: FC Astana 1-1 Celtic

“I thought young Patrick Roberts was outstanding this evening. On a really difficult pitch he showed his level of technique is high quality. He was brilliant in the duel and for a young player he couldn’t have asked for a better experience than that this evening."

    FT: FC Astana 1-1 Celtic

"Huge amount of credit to the players. I think we were all written off before the game, everyone pretty clear in their opinion on the game that we would do well to come back with anything other than a loss. We are not getting too carried away. We’ve got another game against a very good side.”

  7. 'An outstanding result'published at 17:11 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

    FT: FC Astana 1-1 Celtic

“It was an outstanding result for us. We’re disappointed with the goal, it’s nothing new, but I think after that we showed wonderful mentality in the game to keep fighting. Second half we restricted them to not so many clear chances and we end up scoring a fantastic goal. It’s only half-time but it’s a very important result for us.”

The post-match stats show that Celtic had just one shot on target to Astana's seven, but Leigh Griffiths made that once chance count.

Astana will be ruing those missed chances but Celtic improved in the latter stages of the match and will be confident of finishing the job at Celtic Park.

  11. FULL-TIMEpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

    FC Astana 1-1 Celtic

Celtic would have taken that result before kick-off and certainly when they were on the ropes at 1-0 down. Brendan Rodgers will be pleased with the impact of his substitutes, who seemed to bring more solidity to the team. Leigh Griffiths was quiet but when a chance came his way he did what all good strikers do and put it away to give his team a precious away goal. Celtic in a good position going into next Wednesday's second leg.

What a let-off for Celtic! The free-kick is clipped into the penalty area and Roger Canas has a free header just 6 yards out but loops his effort over the bar.

James Forrest has a glimmer of an opening as he drifts inside off his left flank but his pass to Leigh Griffiths is over-hit and the chance is gone.

As we enter five minutes of stoppage time Leigh Griffiths bears down on the Astana penalty area, slips a pass to Patrick Roberts who cuts inside on his left foot but fires his shot wide.

    FC Astana 1-1 Celtic

Celtic just two minutes from what would be a superb result given the balance of play over the course of the match. Brendan Rodgers must take credit for his substitutions, with his replacements steadying the ship after some very rocky moments.

  18. GREAT SAVE!published at 84 mins

    FC Astana 1-1 Celtic

Craig Gordon has been a busy man this evening. This time the keeper has to bail out Celtic again as Junior Kabananga races clean through on goal, Gordon staying tall and getting a boot in the way to block the Congo striker's shot.

Junior Kabananga finds some space to get a shot away from the edge of the box but it's a comfortable save for Craig Gordon.

  20. goal

GOAL Astana 1-1 Celticpublished at 78 mins

    Leigh Griffiths

Patrick Roberts has been the one bright spark for Celtic and it was the English winger who robbed the Astana defender of possession in the box, kept his cool to pick out Griffiths who took one touch and fired home with the left foot from 12 yards.

    Huge goal.
