  1. Postpublished at 10 mins

    FC Astana 0-0 Celtic

Celtic enjoying plenty of the ball in the opening exchanges, knocking it about nicely between defence and midfield without really creating anything in the final third other than that early chance for Leigh Griffiths.

  2. CLOSE!published at 4 mins

    FC Astana 0-0 Celtic

Leigh Griffiths has the first sight of goal as he collects a ball from Kieran Tierney on the edge of the box, swivels and drags a right-foot shot just wide of the target. Encouraging start for the Scottish champions.

  3. Postpublished at 3 mins

    FC Astana 0-0 Celtic

Celtic look to be playing three at the back with Efe Ambrose, Eoghan O'Connell and Mikael Lustig the centre-backs and Kieran Tierney and Patrick Roberts filling the wing-back berths.

Certainly not a defensive line-up from Brendan Rodgers, with Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths up front.

Starting to question how good Rodgers is - giving Ambrose another chance is a total joke.

  8. 'Cool temperature in Astana'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

FC Astana v Celtic (KO 15:00)

    Alasdair Lamont
BBC Sport Scotland at Astana Arena

"A small pocket of Celtic fans are gathered across in a far corner of the Astana Arena as their team go through the final preparations for today's match. It's dried up in the Kazakh capital after a very damp day but the temperature is cool, which will be pleasing for Brendan Rodgers who had anticipated searing heat. The locals are making plenty of racket - all of them are armed with cardboard fans, which when rattled in unison make some noise!"

  9. Astana in form at the right timepublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

FC Astana v Celtic (KO 15:00)

If Celtic fans are looking for any reasons for optimism then they will not find it by examining the form of Astana this season.

They are 21 games into their league season (Celtic have yet to play a competitive domestic fixture), they are seven points clear at the top of the Kazakhstan Premier League with a game in hand, and they have suffered just two league defeats all season, both of which were away from home.

They have dropped just two points on their home ground this season, so Celtic know they are in for a stern test this evening.

FC Astana v Celtic (KO 15:00)

    Richard Wilson

"Brendan Rodgers’ message to Efe Ambrose tonight will be - you’ve got all these critics, go out there, concentrate, don’t make a mistake. Don’t worry about anything else, keep it simple."

  11. Kazakhstan memories haunt Celticpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

FC Astana v Celtic (KO 15:00)

Celtic have recent experience of playing in the Astana Arena, and they will not be happy memories for the survivors from that evening.

Neil Lennon's men went down 2-0 to Shakhter Karagandy in the first leg of the Champions League qualifying playoff in August 2013 to leave their hopes of reaching the group stages hanging by a thread.

However, on one of the great European nights at Celtic Park, the Scottish champions mounted a thrilling comeback, James Forrest's stoppage time strike capping a remarkable turnaround to send Lennon's men through 3-2 on aggregate.

  12. 'A clean sheet would be ideal'published at 14:47 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

FC Astana v Celtic (KO 15:00)

    Quote Message

We’ve got a number of our centre-halves that are out. I thought it was important to keep the same structure and shape as we’ve been working pre-season and not complicate it too much. Obviously the game has come upon us very quickly and we’ve had to, in this early part of pre-season, find that balance quickly. They are halfway through their season, they’ve played 21 games. That makes it difficult. It’s about qualifying over the course of the two games. If you can keep a clean sheet it’s ideal. The most important thing is to be in the tie (going into the second leg).

  14. Defensive headache for Rodgerspublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

FC Astana v Celtic (KO 15:00)

The build-up to this game has been dominated by Celtic's defensive crisis. Kristoffer Ajer, Dedryck Boyata, Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko are all sidelined through injury.

Brendan Rodgers suggested that 20-year-old Eoghan O'Connell - who scored in the weekend friendly against English champions Leicester City - is the solution to that problem, and he starts this evening. The Celtic boss also feels the much-maligned Efe Ambrose - who was at fault for the goal in that horror show in Gibraltar - could still be "an asset" to the club. He takes his place in defence alongside O'Connell.

  16. A step up in quality for Celticpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 27 July 2016

FC Astana v Celtic (KO 15:00)

Good afternoon. An early start for us today as Celtic kick-off their Champions League third round qualifying first leg against Astana in Kazakhstan at 15:00.

Brendan Rodgers' men came through the last round against the part-timers Lincoln Red Imps 3-1 on aggregate, though not before receiving a bloody nose in the shape of a shock 1-0 first leg defeat in Gibraltar - the 'Shock of Gibraltar' as it is destined to be known for years to come.

The Scottish champions know a performance like that today could see their Champions League dream bite the dust against a side who reached the group stage last season. Astana did not look out of place in Europe's premier competition, and although they did not make it to the knockout rounds, four draws from their six group matches would suggest that - as the age-old cliche to describe European opposition goes - they are no mugs.
