  1. Not a bad side...published at 19:17 British Summer Time 5 September 2016

In fact, the Welsh squad on that day is a wild blast from the past.

Some big players in there, literally - Neville Southall, for instance.

Add to that Mark Hughes, Ian Rush, Gary Speed, Chris Coleman, Mark Bowen, Kit Symons, Barry Horne... John Hartson came off the bench too.

    No Ryan Giggs though. Obviously.

Apologies if the formation is all wrong - I've drawn upon the very depths of my football knowledge/Merlin sticker collecting to cobble it together.

The last time these two sides met was 21 years-ago, almost to the day.

On 6 September 1995, at Cardiff Arms Park, Wales won their Euros qualifier group game through a Gary Speed goal.

Around 5,000 people watched that day - there will be one or two more at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight me thinks.

Austria are the early pacesetters in group D after beating Georgia 2-1 in Tbilisi in tonight's early kick-off.

Martin Hinteregger and Marc Janko put Austria 2-0 up before half-time with Jano Ananidze pulling one back on 78 minutes.

It is 61 days since Wales’ momentous Euro 2016 campaign came to an end with a semi-final defeat by Portugal in Lyon, and tonight Wales aim to recapture the spirit of their French adventure.

Giddy nights in Toulouse and Lille may feel like a distant memory at a drizzly Cardiff City Stadium, but Welsh football’s feelgood factor is palpable.

Moldova are the opponents for this opening 2018 World Cup qualifier and, although the Eastern European minnows have shocked Wales in the past, an expectant home crowd in the Welsh capital expect the visitors to be soundly beaten tonight.

With Tony's escapade in mind, we realised we have very little experience of Moldovan culture.

I can't think of even one thing I've done that is in anyway related to Moldova.

Bit of Moldovan trivia for you.

Following England's 4-0 win over Moldova in 1997, the British comedian Tony Hawks travelled to Moldova to face each player from their starting line-up in a game of tennis.

He did just that - and won every match too.

There was a book and then a film a few years ago too.

These are the Moldovans he beat at tennis: Recognise any of them?

Oleg Şişchin, Denis Romanenco, Ion Testimitanu, Radu Rebeja, Oleg Fistican, Iurie Miterev, Vitalie Culibaba, Serghei Rogaciov, Serghei Stroenco, Alexandru Curtianu, Serghei Cleșcenco and Marin Spynu.

Cardiff has had the opportunity to welcome home their football heroes already, but tonight is the first time the Welsh dragons will be in action since those heady days of the summer.

The glitz, glamour and romance of France needs to be put to the back of the mind now.

It's back to the grind of banal phrases such as 'Group D' and 'European qualifying' - the prize? A place at the World Cup in Russia in two years' time.

In Wales' group are tonight's opponents Moldova, as well as Republic of Ireland, Georgia, Austria and Serbia.

  19. Warning from historypublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 5 September 2016

    Dafydd Pritchard
BBC Sport Wales at Cardiff City Stadium

Wales are clear favourites tonight - as you would expect for a team 11th in the Fifa world rankings and 154 places above their opponents.

However, Moldova can take heart from their head-to-head record - with their two meetings yielding one win apiece.

Moldova’s 3-2 victory in 1994 was a low point for Wales, whose team on that occasion included current manager Chris Coleman and his assistant Kit Symons.

There have been plenty of fallow periods in Welsh football history but a repeat of that humiliating result in Moldova is unthinkable tonight. Wales hope so, at least.

The Republic of Ireland, who had a not-too-shabby Euros themselves, get the post-Robbie Keane era under way tonight when they face Serbia.

There had been doubt over the fixture, with a deluge of rain in Belgrade. But various Irish media are reporting the game will go ahead after a pitch inspection.

Might be a few puddles to avoid. Or aim for, if you're in the business of trying to hold the ball up...
