Would Wenger be the right choice as England boss?

Rob Elmore: Even as an Arsenal fan, I would love Wenger to get the England job. Time for a change for both teams might be what's needed...

Vishnu Ladwa: Being an Arsenal fan, I think that Wenger would be an ideal fit for England.

I'm disappointed for him. He'll devastated. He earned the right to take the job, but he's been daft. That entrapment thing could happen to most people. He's had a few beers, someone is offering him vast sums of money. Is that the conduct of an England manager? Probably not and it's cost him.

  4. Will we see Allardyce back in football?published at 18:57 British Summer Time 28 September 2016

John Cross of the Daily Mirror: "It won't work for some clubs but some, especially those in relegation trouble, will think they wouldn't have sacked him anyway. I do think there will be some clubs willing to take him come January."

Looking at it from a legal stance at what Sam said. You can get round third-party ownership - yes you can. Taking money to speak in Asia - nothing illegal there. Speaking about other people - not nice, but not illegal. Enough for him to be sacked?

I think if Allardyce had been manager of a club, rather than England who have to be whiter than white, he wouldn't have lost his job yesterday.

Love an old team photo, but the Tottenham lads have had a shocker in this one. There's only about five of them actually looking at the camera.

Anyway, 'why's it on this page?' You might ask. Well, the reason it's here is because this is the Spurs team from 1960-61 season. They hold the record for the best start to a season by an English club after winning their first 11 games.

Manchester City will equal that record if they beat Celtic in the Champions League tonight.

Funnily enough, it was City who ended Tottenham's winning run back in 1960.

Celtic are set-up top create chances. Rodgers is saying they are going to be more offensive minded than against Barcelona - that is borne out in his team.

De Bruyne has been fantastic this season - Guardiola says he's one of the top players in the world at the moment. Who do they have in his place? David Silva. Oh dear, one of my favourite Premier League players of all time.

Manchester City's team, player for player, is better than Celtic, but it doesn't always work that way.

It's a Xhaka family affair tonight as Arsenal midfieilder Granit faces his brother and former team-mate Taulant.

It's not the first time the pair have faced each other, with Granit playing for Switzerland and Taulant turning out for Albania at Euro 2016.

Both game through the youth system at Basel and Granit has said before that they are not just brothers, "but also best friends".

Let's hope that's still the case after full time tonight.

Of all the years I've been watching games here, I can't remember Celtic ever playing for a point. It's not in their DNA. Brendan Rodgers is a Celtic man at heart and knows the fans want intelligent attempts to attack. Play for a point? I don't think so.

It's the day after Sam Allardyce's 67-day reign as England manager came to an end and now attention has turned to who should be his successor.

One man heavily linked with the role will be stood in the Arsenal dugout tonight as they take on Basel in the Champions League and, if rumours are to believed, he was a target, external for the Football Association before Allardyce was appointed.

So the question is, would Arsene Wenger be the right man for the job?

  18. Will the chance ever come again for Wenger?published at 18:30

It is 20 years ago this week since Arsene Wenger was appointed Arsenal manager.

In the decade after he arrived at the Gunners, the Frenchman oversaw a period of sustained success as they collected three Premier League titles and four FA Cups, but a European trophy eluded him.

    Then came Paris, 2006.

Arsenal were just 14 minutes away from winning the Champions League when Barcelona scored twice to win what was then their second European title.

The Gunners have never appeared in another Champions League final since.

Now, with rumours linking him to the England job, will that night in Paris prove to be as close as Wenger gets to the Champions League trophy with Arsenal?
