Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says he sess shades of Ronald Koeman in John Stones, the defender he signed from Koeman's Everton in the summer.

Koeman and Guardiola played in the same Barcelona side during the 1990s and will face each other as managers today.

"They [Stones and Koeman] are quite similar as players in the sense that they both like to play the ball," said Guardiola.

"Normally, a central defender is a big guy who plays with the head and marks man to man and is strong in the air. We need that, of course, but now it's the added plus of the quality of his play. John has similarities to Ronald, especially in terms of mentality.

"John is a guy who wants to play under pressure. Ronald was by far one of the best central defenders I've ever met. I cannot compare now, not yet, but maybe in the future.

"The long balls are always... wow. Ronald was the best ever at that. But John is young enough that he can improve."

Everton manager Ronald Koeman: "I have all good memories of Pep. We have a really strong friendship. Sometimes we have time for dinner and to talk about football and to talk about life.

"When he was manager of Barcelona I saw the best Barcelona team in every aspect of football. Most of the other managers win titles but not with that way of football.

"It is impressive the way City play football. It's difficult to defend against but we have had some good examples of teams getting a good result against City."

This game's sub-plot would make a good documentary, if not quite the full film story.

Twenty six years ago, the late, great Johann Cruyff first encouraged, external a young Pep Guardiola to learn from his Barcelona team-mate Ronald Koeman, laying the foundations for his much admired football philosophies.

Now, as they meet for the first time as opposing coaches, will the mentor be able to outsmart his once very eager pupil? How very Star Wars!

It mostly depends on how their players perform of course, and whilst City should have the edge - especially at home - Koeman will feel that his can follow the Spurs example of how to beat them.

A game to have made Cruyff proud will do beautifully.

Fun fact: the last time Bournemouth and Hull played each other was in March 2005, in League One.

Hull won 4-0, with Stuart Elliott scoring twice. The Tigers also had Nick Barmby in their side. Jon Walters was on the bench.

Mike Phelan won the manager-of-the-month award for August as Hull City started the season with two victories and now, quite rightly, he has been confirmed in the job.

Hull haven't won in the Premier League since August, but their last three matches were against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Now they have a run of fixtures against teams of a similar stature, starting with Bournemouth, who have recorded 1-0 victories in their last two home matches.

The Cherries are in good form, with just one defeat in their last five, and it may take something special from Hull to give Phelan extra reason for celebration.

Those who played for their countries included Brad Smith, Joshua King, Nathan Ake, Max Gradel and Lewis Cook.

Hull will be without striker Dieumarci Mbokani, who has returned from the international break with an injury.

Michael Dawson is getting closer to a return following a knee problem, while Ahmed Elmohamady is back after a ban.

    It took them long enough.

Hull finally appointed Mike Phelan as their new manager on Friday. The 54-year-old had been in temporary charge for 12 weeks since Steve Bruce's departure in the summer, leading them to 15th in the table ahead of today's game at Bournemouth.

In September, Phelan revealed he was offered the job on a full-time basis but there had since been no contact amid the club's search for a new owner.

It'll be just Mike's luck if the club gets sold and the new owners want to bring in their own man. Most likely some name from the 1990s. What's Tomas Skuhravy doing these days?

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "Bob Bradley has a lot of experience. He's not a beginner, he has travelled a lot and has accumulated experience in the United States.

"He has been in Egypt, France recently and is now in England [i.e. English football], which is certainly a fantastic opportunity for him.

"It's also good for the Premier League - to have an American here will create even more interest for the Premier League in the United States. He is equipped to deal with what is asked of him."

This is what the American has had to say ahead of his first game as Swans boss: "Whenever there's a change, at any club, it's a fresh start for everybody.

"You can see that on certain faces, that's clear. Even at a time in a season when it's been difficult, when there's been managerial change, you see enthusiasm and a certain amount of excitement.

"That doesn't automatically mean because you've changed some things everything's going to come together right away. But it's a start."
