  8. Celtic in the driving seatpublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 23 August 2016

Hapoel Beer Sheva v Celtic (19:45)

Celtic have a handsome three-goal lead to protect from the first leg.

Goals from Tom Rogic and a double from Leigh Griffiths had Brendan Rodgers' men on easy street, but two goals in two minutes from Lucio Maranhao and Maor Melikson brought the tie to life again.

Those two away goals give Hapoel Beer Sheva hope of a dramatic turnaround, but late goals from Moussa Dembele and Scott Brown keep Celtic in the driving seat.

The "Champions Route" to the group stages has provided more toil than triumph.

Celtic’s second-leg tie in Israel against Hapoel Beer Sheva sees the Scottish champions potentially 90 minutes away from a return to the group stage of the Champions League. The scale of the challenge they will face should they succeed is laid bare by recent history, though.

The Champions Route was introduced to the Champions League qualifying rounds in 2009/10, pitching league title holders against each other in the final playoff round. In effect, it opened up the group stage to countries from smaller nations, because they were no longer potentially having to face the fourth best sides from the leading leagues to reach the group stage.

Ten teams compete in the final Champions Route playoff round, with 35 having qualified for the group stage since 2009/10. Yet of those 35, 25 finished bottom of their group, while six more finished second bottom. Only four teams from the Champions Route have qualified for the knockout rounds, Olympiacos in 2009/10, FC Copenhagen in 2010/11, APOEL in 2011/12 and Celtic themselves in 2012/13.

Here's what Celtic can earn if they get through tonight in Israel:

    • £2.6m for coming through the qualifying games
    • £10.3m for playing in the Champions League group stage
    • About £10m in TV money
    • About £7m from gate receipts at Celtic Park

That lot would boost Celtic's coffers to the tune of £30m, and that's before you consider prize money of £1.3m for a group stage win and a third of that for a draw.
