Well Celtic's joy at qualifying for the Champions League group stage was checked with a heavy dose of reality this evening. 

The Parkhead side slumped to the heaviest European defeat in their history, undone by the genius of Barcelona's deadly attacking trio.

Lionel Messi bagged three of the seven goals to become the first player in history to score six Champions League hat-tricks. Neymar provided an extraordinary four assists and helped himself to a goal as well, while Luis Suarez notched a double to compound Celtic's humilation. In amongst all that was as sublime a volleyed goal as you are likely to see from Andres Iniesta.

Things may have been different if Moussa Dembele had converted a first-half penalty with the score at 1-0, but with Barca in this form it is hard to imagine that they would not have found a way to win even if they had been pegged back at that stage.

It was simply a mesmerising display from Luis Enrique's men, who will take some stopping as they go in search of a sixth European Cup.

Celtic will look to bounce back in Champions League Group C, but things don't get much easier as it is Pep Guardiola's Manchester City next up at Celtic Park on 28 September.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "These players have been brilliant. They couldn't have come to a more difficult place in world football after a highly intense game at the weekend, where they dealt with so much pressure and played so well, to have had hardly any preparation time, to come and play against the world's best at keeping the ball, it was a tough ask for them. That last 15-20 minutes probably did feel quite long."

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton is staying positive despite Celtic suffering their worst ever defeat in European competition.

Well if you can bare to read it, Tom English reports on a chastening evening for Celtic in Barcelona.

“Of course it’s never nice professionally when that happens. I thought in the first period of the game our set-up and organisation was good. 

"We gave away a goal very early which is certainly not what you want to do here. But I thought we came back into the game and once we actually got a bit of belief and a bit of confidence to pass the ball then we started to open up and create opportunities. 

"Obviously there’s a massive moment in the first-half. If you can score the penalty and get it to 1-1 then it can make the crowd a bit nervy, especially after the weekend loss. To then very quickly go down to 2-0 was disappointing. 

"They get the third goal and I think that combination of tiredness, mixed in with their quality and their freshness, these are top-class players. They’ve done that to much better teams than ourselves. 

"By the time the end of the game comes you are frustrated and disappointed.”

Brendan Rodgers described his old mate Luis Suarez as a "beautiful man" in the build-up to this match. Well the former Liverpool striker and his partners-in-crime Lionel Messi and Neymar gave a display of breathtaking beauty this evening.

It is the heaviest defeat of Rodgers' managerial career and the worst defeat in Celtic's European history.

However, they are not the first team to be destroyed by this Barcelona side and they certainly will not be the last.

Lionel Messi becomes the first man in Champions League history to score six hat-tricks in the competition.

Neymar is the first man to provide four assists in a match since Zlatan Ibrahimovic for PSG back in 2012.

Celtic hoped to make history when they qualified for the Champions League, but not like this.

Lionel Messi may grab the headlines tomorrow after bagging a hat-trick but Neymar has been utterly unplayable this evening.

The Brazil striker has laid on four goals this evening and scored one himself.

It's sensational stuff from Barca. Celtic's nerves have been completely shredded. This is the 13th time that Barca have scored five, or more, since the start of last season. They got eight against Deportivo.
