"We tried to press them more in the second half but we have conceded from a set-piece again which has been our downfall this season. 

"We know Gaston Ramirez well, he is not renowned for his heading ability but we gave him a free header in the box.

"Our first shot on target was in the 92nd minute and that is not good enough.

"We need help. We made signings in the summer and they have done their bit but they were all last minute. We are thin up top and we need someone who can put the ball in the net."

More from Hull boss Mike Phelan: "Hopefully come January we will look different. We need that investment. We can't afford any more injuries, it is going to be a hard slog throughout Christmas.

"Our aim has always been to stay up and we are not adrift."

Hull manager Mike Phelan: "We were short from an attacking point of view. Every time we played forwards we gave the ball away, we couldn't get up the field.

"Our lack of threat is down to the fact that we haven't got the firepower you need to compete at this level. We have injuries and suspensions and it is difficult to be an attacking force."

Hull boss Mike Phelan: "We tried to drag something out of it but it was really really disappointing. We gave away a ridiculous goal from a set piece, we all have jobs to do and we didn't concentrate.

"We defended well at times and after they scored we came into it but we have to do better and don't concede when we don't need to. We all understand the predicament we are in and hardship that we face but we have enough players to do certain jobs.

"We are short on the ground, we have added a couple but we are where we are because of the beginning of the season. We have to keep our heads above water."

Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka: "We deserved to win, we had a lot of chances and all of the possession. We were confident on the pitch and once we went ahead we had the experience to manage the game.

"I am really proud of the team. It is difficult to play in the Premier League.

"Sometimes Gaston Ramirez will score, sometimes another player but we won promotion to the Premier League by playing as a team and that is how we stay.

"We have 15 points, we must keep going and working together. We have to fight with the teams in the relegation positions because we are a newly-promoted team. We have done nothing yet."

Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson: "We have played well without getting results and we clung on, that was massive. You need to beat the teams which will be around you.

"Gaston Ramirez is very important for us, on any given day he can slice open a defence and it was a great finish. You can't get carried away with a win, we need to maintain our levels."

Ben Gibson looks very, very pleased with that win as the Boro players come off the pitch. Not a great performance but three points. that's what matters.
