Whether Mike Dean was right or wrong, I can't see 10-man Saints getting anything out of this game now... Spurs dominating possession. Again.

You all seem to be in agreement regarding the penalty/red card decision from referee Mike Dean. 

Graham Green: At least that penalty and red card have given me something else to complain about in addition to Southampton's holiday schedule. 

Richard Morris: Does Mike Dean know the rules of football?

Steven Kinghan: At last some consistency from referees, both Herrera and Redmond now sent off for slipping!

Justin Bieber: Ref will send a Spurs player off in next few mins, he's already looking to even things up.

Here's our story from the summer:

Players who commit a foul to deny a goalscoring opportunity will no longer automatically be sent off, football's rule-making body has confirmed.

The previous 'triple-punishment' rule required a red card - and therefore a suspension - as well as the award of a penalty under those circumstances.

However, players committing accidental fouls that deny a goalscoring chance will now be cautioned instead.

But deliberate fouls will still incur a red card.

Those include holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball in order to deny a goalscoring opportunity.

It's a question still troubling us - and no doubt you. Why was Nathan Redmond sent off there? Was it accidental? Wasn't that 'denying a goalscoring opportunity' red card rule changed? Yep. Here's why...

Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk - those skyscrapers of Saints defenders - lurk menacingly in the Spurs box again. Set-pieces appear to be the home side's best chance of climbing back on terms. Fonte mets the delivery but can't stretch Hugo Lloris.

Now this game is warming up. Ref Mike Dean takes centre stage again, booking Danny Rose as he tussles with Cedric Soares on the right touchline. Saints free-kick in another decent position...

Two points for Leeds Rhinos! Harry Kane takes the perfect rugby league conversion, the worst football penalty.

Kane's standing foot seems to move both turf and ball milliseconds before he strikes the penalty and the ball sails over the crossbar - and possibly stand - as a result.

After a long delay, ref Mike Dean decides Nathan Redmond's offence is worthy of a red card. Saints down to 10 men and facing a penalty to go 3-1 down...

Alli still got his shot away but he was off balance after contact from Redmond. It was a great counter-attack.

Bonus. Kyle Walker has New Year's Day off work. He receives his fifth booking of the season. 

Chance for an instant Saints reply. Free-kick in a promising position on the right, swung in and met by Jose Fonte. But he can't copy Harry Kane, heading well over the bar.

Very good header. Spurs got "done" early in the game but they have returned the compliment. Harry Kane is just too good to be kept down for too long.

Ooof! Victor Wanyama has not lost any of his edge since leaving St Mary's. The Spurs midfielder clatters former team-mate Steven Davis with a lumbering challenge. Yellow? Nope, just a word of warning from ref Mike Dean.

In answer to that question in the previous entry - neither so far. Nothing of note has happened. Apart from Dave in the Chapel Stand returning to his seat with a cheeseburger AND meat and potato pie. 

Saints need to win. Spurs need to win. Who's going to be the bravest and go for it?
