Wigan climb one place in the Championship table after Warren Joyce's first victory as boss, going above Cardiff on goal difference to 21st

They're also level on points with Wolves, and are only behind Paul Lambert's side on goals scored.

With Rotherham cut adrift at the bottom, only one point separates the sides from 19th to 23rd.

Huddersfield remain sixth, only a point above Sheffield Wednesday.

Wigan captain Stephen Warnock told Sky Sports: "Yanic has been asked to play a new role which is a bit alien to him but he's dealt with it really well and he was a threat all night.

"We knew that if we came here and made it hard for them that with Yanic's pace up front we were always going to make chances and it's important that you take those chances when they come about."

Wigan forward Yanic Wildschut told Sky Sports: "We're happy we won, we needed the points because we didn't want the gap to become too big.

"It was hard today against a good team, but a goal and assist for me was not bad as it was only my second game up front."

Former Huddersfield goalkeeper Matt Glennon on BBC Radio Leeds:

"Huddersfield shouldn’t be conceding two goals like that against Wigan who are 23rd in the league

"The manager’s going to go absolutely berserk in there and rightly so and they’ve let him down and they’ve let the supporters down.

"They need a target man who is a bit of a player as well. We know they can do better at the back but you've got to score goals and they never look like they are going to score more than one goal."
