Newcastle fans are certainly helping with the atmosphere in the ground. They are jam packed into a small area. There isn't a spare seat in their end. We haven't had a chance on goal yet.

  2. CLOSE!published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    Liverpool 0-0 Leeds

The Leeds man almost sets Anfield alight.

Forward Kemar Roofe finds space outside the box and gets the ball out of his feet, before letting fly with a shot that is collected well by Simon Mignolet.

    Hull 0-0 Newcastle

David Meyler doesn't usually go down easily but the Hull midfielder has taken a blow to his neck and needs treatment. The good news for the hosts is that he is able to continue.

    Liverpool 0-0 Leeds

A long-forgotten rivalry? A meaningless competition? Somebody has forgotten to tell the 50,000+ crowd.

"Stand up if you hate Man U," rings out of the away end. The home stands rise to their feet and join in...

    Liverpool 0-0 Leeds

The visitors manage to clear the corner, although Emre Can did go down under a challenge from Eunan O'Kane.

The crowd bay for a penalty, but it wasn't. Sit down.

    Liverpool 0-0 Leeds

Leeds are under pressure in their own third for the first time, and earn a corner as Divock Origi's cross is cleared by Liam Cooper...

    Hull 0-0 Newcastle

There's no lack of confidence about this Newcastle team. The Championship leaders have settled quickly against their Premier League hosts. Vurnon Anita's cross causes problems but neither keeper has been seriously tested.

    Liverpool 0-0 Leeds

Liverpool have not got going yet, but credit to Leeds who are keeping their shape well and look very well organised under Garry Monk's stewardship.

    Liverpool 0-0 Leeds

    Oh what a chance.

Leeds should be ahead as the flag stays down and Hadi Sacko breaks the offside trap.

He makes his way into the box but his low, drilled shot is saved superbly by the returning goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's feet.

A bit more composure there and the West Yorkshire side would have led.

Absolutely rocking at Anfield, a throwback to the days when Liverpool and Leeds did battle in the Premier League. This could get rather tasty.

A couple of minutes gone and both sides are just settling in.

Deafening. The 5,500+ Leeds fans are making a right old racket from the away end - but their "Marching On Together" anthem is comfortably drowned out by "You'll Never Walk Alone".

Both sets of fans bang up for this renewal of old cross-Pennine acquaintances.

  14. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    Liverpool 0-0 Leeds

A few minutes late but we are finally under way at Anfield.

Brrr, hope you've got your hats and gloves as it's a bitterly cold evening.

With all four teams in tonight's EFL Cup action from the north, they'll be used to it.

  15. 'Low crowd'published at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    Hull City 0-0 Newcastle

    Pat Nevin
Ex-Chelsea winger on BBC Radio 5 live

It's not a huge turn out. It's noisy at the Newcastle end but there are very limited numbers of Hull fans in comparison to a Premier League match.

  16. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2016

    Hull City 0-0 Newcastle

    Off we go.

Newcastle are chasing a first semi-final appearance since 2005 while Hull have never reached a League Cup semi-final.

We've also got one game in League One this evening, where in-form Sheffield United will go second if they win their game in hand over Walsall.

The Blades started the season by taking one point from their first four games but Chris Wilder's side have since gone unbeaten in 15 league games, winning 11.

In contrast, their opponents have not won a league game in more than a month - but the Saddlers did win at Bramall Lane in the EFL Trophy at the start of October.

Still big pockets of spaces in the lower tier of the Anfield Road stand, which is occupied by the away fans. Nightmare traffic on the M62 apparently.

Most of the home fans have managed to get here in time - and they've been treated to what the Anfield PA fella says is "his first Christmas song of the year".

In November? And something that wasn't the Pogues? Tsk.
