    West Ham 1-0 Hull

    West Ham United

More from West Ham boss Slaven Bilic following his side's narrow win over Hull.

“I told every one of their players and Mike (Phelan) that since they changed their system a couple of games ago they look really good.

"They are not afraid of playing, they play good football and I really mean if they continue to play like this then the results have to come."

"Am I pleased with our performance? No I'm not. Am I pleased with our reaction? I am but we have to play for 90 minutes."

Stoke City midfielder Joe Allen said: "It is two points dropped, it is as simple as that. Playing against 10 men, we were in control and it was a bit of carnage at the end.

"We have thrown away two points and only have ourselves to blame. That has hurt us. We just lost our composure. With a two-goal lead against 10 men, you can concede one, but to concede two is not good.

"After 25 minutes I thought we were in control and could get a third but the game flipped on its head and it looked like we had 10 men.

"I don't want to completely batter us but we have let a two-goal lead slip. We will give Leicester credit in the way they didn't give up, but we have let them back in the game."

  4. 'It is a massive three points for us'published at 17:38 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    West Ham 1-0 Hull

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: “In the first half definitely we were fortunate. We were sloppy, they were better.

“We started good but gave them a couple of chances. We came into that feeling of being scared of playing.

“At half time I said there are a couple of good things, one that it is still 0-0 and second that it can’t be much worse, we can lift up the tempo.

“Second half we were much better, in the last half an hour we were really good. We scored the goal and should have finished the game.

“It is a massive three points for us. Back to back wins, in this stadium, are very good considering the situation we were in."

    Sunderland 1-0 Watford

    Watford

Watford manager Walter Mazzarri via an interpreter: "We did everything ourselves and I'm very angry. We missed many chances in the first half and we gave them the goal easily. I'm very angry.

"Sometimes you make mistakes but it's only our fault. We should have scored and we didn't. I've spoken with the guys, they know what they did, and we will have to sort it out.

"I'm concerned by the way we play. I was happy with the performance today but if we don't take our chances, we won't get anywhere."

  9. League Two round-uppublished at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

Plymouth go back to the top of the division as Craig Tanner's late winner gave them a 1-0 win at Accrington Stanley. Carlisle are second after a 2-1 home win over Yeovil Town with Doncaster beating Grimsby 1-0 in an early kick-off.

Fourth-placed Portsmouth lost some ground on the top three as they could only manage a goalless draw against Hartlepool, while Luton in fifth won 2-0 at Blackpool, a result that takes the Tangerines out of the play-off places.

At the bottom, a bad-tempered match between Crawley and Newport saw 13 players get booked, with Crawley winning 3-1 to keep Newport bottom. Cheltenham got a valuable 2-1 win at Morecambe, with Exeter and Colchester beating Mansfield and Notts County respectively.

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri said: "It was a fantastic spirit and we wanted to fight until the end so it was important for us to play well.

"At the start we were very dangerous and after the sending off everything changed, my players were so nervous. During half-time we spoke a lot and had to believe something good was possible. I am always positive."

Asked if Foxes striker Jamie Vardy deserved to be sent off, Ranieri added: "One manager says yes, one says no. If you listen to me I say 'no', if you listen to Mark Hughes he says 'yes'.

"I don't know if he touched the player, but he touched the ball. I was angry (at the referee) because I saw my players fight and there were so many yellow cards, but it was a normal battle in the Premier League.

"It could be a turning point today, but we have to wait and see the next matches."

  12. 'I think West Ham have got away with one'published at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    West Ham 1-0 Hull

    Hull City

More from Hull City manager Mike Phelan: "We didn't score a goal, we should have had two or three goals. That's the same story over the last few games, we are playing terrific football but we can't find the finish at the end of it. We kept going, credit to the players."

On the penalty decision that went against his team: “I am not going to go down that road finding fault with the referee’s decision. I think West Ham have got away with one.

“These results only happen to certain clubs at certain times. We had enough opportunities to win a few matches but we have to keep fighting. We need that extra bit of quality that gives us points.

“We had West Ham on the back foot, even the West Ham supporters will look at it from that point of view.

“We are just not getting the rub of the green. We are strong in certain departments and weak in others.

"We are going into the transfer window now. It is always an iffy time to do deals because we are at the bottom. If anyone feels courageous and wants a challenge I am hoping this club can give it to them.”

    Middlesbrough 3-0 Swansea

    Aitor KarankaImage source, Reuters

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka: "It's been our biggest victory, but it was our worst performance.

"Everybody in this group is really confident. We've picked up experience after every game.

"The main thing is to create chances. We created a few and scored three goals.

"Keeper Victor Valdes didn't surprise me with the save at the end. He's always in the game.

"It was massive to get the win. These wins against direct opponents are always really important."

  16. 'It wasn't a great performance, it was a winning performance'published at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    Sunderland 1-0 Watford

    Sunderland

Sunderland manager David Moyes told BBC Sport: "I think it was on the verge of must-win. to make sure we didn't get detached from others around us.

"The players stuck at it, even though it got ugly at times.

"We were slow getting out the blocks and to be fair to Watford, they started ok. We didn't press enough in the first-half.

"Watford had a lot of set pieces and we tighthened it up with 10 mins to go by bringing John O'Shea on. You never know if decisions like that are going to work. It did today.

"I told the players we had to win today. It wasn't a great performance but it was a winning performance which always hides a multitude of sins."

  17. 'You have to get the job done and we didn't'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    Stoke City 2-2 Leicester City

    Stoke City

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes said: "Leading 2-0 it was well deserved, we were good value for that lead and were in good shape. You have to get the job done and we didn't do that.

"They came at us and that is why they were champions last year. In the end we were lacking that spark and energy and they took advantage of that. You think it should be a straight-forward second half, but we made it difficult and allowed them to get back into the game.

"We are in decent shape, but this game should have been won. We have big games ahead of us but you have to test yourself against them at some stage of the season."

On the referee's decision to send off Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, Hughes added: "I've seen it and it was a two-footed challenge. The lad left the floor and I don't know what they (Leicester) are complaining about. From my point of view it was clear."

  18. 'We need genius or luck'published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    West Ham 1-0 Hull

    Hull City

Hull manager Mike Phelan: "It's difficult when your team is doing ever so well, you feel for them because you want them to score the goals and get the credit. If we can play like that, we just need a stroke of genius or luck to get us goals.

"We gave the opportunity for the referee to make a decision - and he took it. The post is there to stand in the way of a goal and it did that a few times today.

"You have to have a wry smile on your face or you'd be very, very depressed."

    Middlesbrough 3-0 Swansea

    Swansea City

    Bob BradleyImage source, PA

Swans boss Bob Bradley: "Same story. A number of games we've started in a positive way then give away a goal. We go down one-zero. The goal goes in in a strange way. We then give the PK. We put ourselves in the hole. It's been a case of road matches, but now we have two games at home.

"We're disappointed right now. We came in with a good idea. We turn our attention to the home matches over the Christmas period."

  20. 'Their manager said we were the better team'published at 17:11 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2016

    West Ham 1-0 Hull

    Hull City

    Andrew RoberstonImage source, PA

Hull City's Andrew Robertson: “Anyone who watches the highlights will see we dominated the game. We had so many chances and have been done by a soft penalty.

“That is probably our best performance of the season and it ends up with us bottom of the league. That is the beauty of football. We have got to hope it turns around for us.

“First half we went in and West Ham were booed off. I can’t believe we’ve not scored today.

“If we play like that we will win games - that is a fact.

“We believe it will turn around, the fans do. Some of our performances haven’t been good enough but the fans were on their feet clapping us off. Their manager said we were the better team and that is just unfortunate.”
