  1. 'Chelsea could do with a Larsson-style signing'published at 13:33 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

The January transfer window is about to open - but which Premier League side will do the best bit of business this time?

BBC football expert Mark Lawrenson looks at each top-flight side and examines who they need to sign, or whether they need to put down the shutters to fend off bids for their best players.

Whatever the result for Chelsea today, their winning streak will remain overshadowed by a Welsh world-record breaker.

The New Saints - TNS to you and I - won 2-0 at Cefn Druids last night for their 27th in a row in all competitions - one more than Ajax's previous record in 1971-72.

That side included Johan Cruyff, among other legends.

  3. Can Stoke stop Chelsea?published at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

Stoke have the capability to stop Chelsea's great run of form. They have enough good players in their squad, but they just haven't done anything consistently this season.

It's been really interesting how Chelsea started this season after their pre-season. Antonio Conte was desperate to play 4-4-2, but it never quite worked. But Conte learned the abilities of his players very, very quickly, and now his 3-4-3 team's working for him. He has players playing in slightly unexpected positions, but everyone's getting things right.

Where's Kriss Akabusi when you need him?

Chelsea are aiming for a joint Premier League record today.

Victory against Stoke would be their 13th successive win, matching the mark for a single season set by Arsenal in 2001-02.

  5. 'Scatty' McClean signs new Baggies dealpublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

Southampton v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

West Brom midfielder James McClean has signed a new contract, committing him to the club until 2019.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland winger's deal includes an option, in the club's favour, to extend it by a further year.

"He's been a good signing for the club," Baggies head coach Tony Pulis told BBC WM.

"He's solid. He's scatty at times but he's good in the dressing room. He's a great lad to have around the place."

Some of the goals Leicester have conceded recently have been ridiculous. Fundamental defensive errors that just didn't happen last season. If they continue not to do the basics well then there's no doubt about it, they will be in the relegation dogfight.

Leicester v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

    Mark Lawrenson

This time last year we were all debating whether Leicester can win the league, we all said no. Now, we’re debating whether they’ll be relegated. We think they won’t, but they could.

Is there any Leicester player playing to the same level as they were last year? No, there isn’t.

Chelsea are a great team to watch, organised and disciplined but then attacking with intent. They play a system which really suits the players in their squad.

Eden Hazard is really enjoying his football. He is better than he was two years ago and that's because he's matured as a player and has more experience in this league. He's come back after a disappointing season last year, and now he's playing at the top of his game.

  10. Wenger unimpressed by season so farpublished at 12:54 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

Arsenal v Crystal Palace (Sun, 16:00 GMT)

Enjoying the Premier League season so far?

Well Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger isn't. The Frenchman is "disappointed" with the standards, saying there have been no memorable games despite boasting the best managers in the world.

Today's game, considering the two managers, is not about defending. It's about entertaining, playing expansive football and going for the jugular.

Whichever side is better in the final third will win the game.

Yaya Toure should start. He won't panic on the ball, he'll hold off opposition players and he will bring some craft to the centre of the park.

  14. 'Sturridge is now an impact player'published at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

    Daniel SturridgeImage source, AFP

Daniel Sturridge is a fantastic talent, but he has never won over the Anfield faithful. But he's now found his role in the squad and he's not spat his dummy out. He's an impact player, playing a vital role off the bench. He is still improving, and when he reaches his peak he will start.

  15. De Gea not keen on another awardpublished at 12:39 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

Man Utd v Middlesbrough (15:00 GMT)

De Gea was the first goalkeeper to win the award since its introduction in 1988 and is the first player to win it in three consecutive seasons.

Peter Schmeichel never picked it up.

Adam Lallana is the fittest he’s ever been, and now all of a sudden he’s got goals and assists. There’s an argument that he’s the best English player around at the moment.

He’s now the player that Liverpool thought that they’d bought from Southampton.

    Swansea v Bournemouth (15:00 GMT)

Bob Bradley of SwanseaImage source, Reuters

Swansea - what are the club doing, the owners? Why would they get rid of Francesco Guidolin and bring in a manager with no Premier League experience in Bob Bradley?

And Joe Allen, who had an amazing Euros with Wales in the summer, was messed around by Swansea. They failed to get their ducks in order and get that transfer through in good time, and in the end he ended up at Stoke.

Swans. Ducks. See what Trevor's done there?

I’ve heard people asking whether Sam Allardyce can keep Crystal Palace from relegation – they’ll be halfway up the league!

Palace have a quality squad, this is the easiest job he’s ever had.
