  1. Who will miss out on the top four?published at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

    Trevor Sinclair
Ex-Man City & West Ham winger on Final Score

I think it’s going to be two of Manchester City, Arsenal or Tottenham, with both of the London clubs being favourites.

I think Manchester United will have a strong finish to the season. Now Jose Mourinho has settled on a formation the players are filling the boots well.

City will struggle to keep clean sheets without a new centre-back and goalkeeper.

The vantage point from the top of the stand at Turf Moor gives an excellent view out on to the Lancashire hills. Rolling green, blue sky overhead. Lovely, the sort of place where you could walk for hours to a pub where they serve hotpot and lager with bits of wood floating in it.

Leicester's summer of celebration has been followed by the mother of all hangovers that stubbornly refuses to clear and leaves them sitting just three points above the relegation zone as the year draws to a close.

Claudio Ranieri's team have shown glimpses of their quality recently against Manchester City and Stoke, but are in real danger of being dragged into a full-blown relegation battle.

West Ham's man of the match when I saw them against Hull a couple of weeks ago was the post (as voted by fans on the club's Twitter account), but they won that day and have found the sort of form recently that Leicester currently crave.

A win here would be their fourth in a row and add to the champions' collective headache.

    Championship

The Championship's first game of the day has just finished, with Nahki Wells scoring a last-minute free-kick to rescue a 1-1 draw for Huddersfield at home to Blackburn Rovers.

The visitors had looked on course for a smash-and-grab win after Danny Graham scored in the 81st minute with Rovers' first shot of the game, but Wells' equaliser extends Huddersfield's unbeaten run to six games.

There's five other games in the Championship today, four of those kicking off at 15:00 GMT. In the afternoon kick-offs, Derby could move into the play-off places if they beat struggling Wigan while Preston host Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves are at home to QPR, who have lost their previous six league games.

Gianfranco Zola is still looking for his first win as Birmingham boss and he takes his side to Barnsley, while Brentford host Norwich in the 17:30 GMT kick off.

If Chelsea do secure a record-equalling 13th successive top-flight win, they are guaranteed to head into 2017 in an even more commanding position because their two nearest challengers, Liverpool and Manchester City, must face each other later in the day.

Antonio Conte's side look so strong - consider the fact that key pair Diego Costa and N'Golo Kante weren't missed on Boxing Day when they sat out the victory over Bournemouth because of suspension.

You wouldn't give Stoke much chance. Their season has fallen into three parts: a poor start, resurgence and now no win in four.

It tells you something that midfielder Joe Allen is their top scorer with five goals. Manager Mark Hughes may well try and find a solution in the transfer window.

Manchester United are in a very good run of form and they’ve been helped by the catalyst Ibrahimovic.

He’s actually scored 50 in all competitions in 2016. Everything seems to go through him, he’s the focal point.

There are other components to this Manchester United side contributing to their form as well, they're looking very settled. You've got all elements pulling in the same direction.

Marouane Fellaini  has made only one start for Manchester United since being hauled off at half-time in the 4-0 defeat by Chelsea on 23 October.

When he was spotted in Milan earlier this month, trying to keep his trademark big hair hiden under his hood, it was presumed that he was off to either Inter or AC in January., external

He has 18 months on his Old Trafford contract and has not been offered a new deal.

Could he yet convince Jose Mourinho that - at 29 - he is part of United's future rather than forgettable recent past?

The calendar year has certainly had its highs and lows for Manchester United, but 2016 is drawing to a close with real momentum.

Jose Mourinho's side look to be in the groove as they aim for their fifth league win in a row. If they can maintain their recent consistency and performance levels into 2017 then a Champions League charge could be within reach.

Plotting to upset the odds is Mourinho's former assistant Aitor Karanka, who meets his mentor as a manager for the first time.

He can be satisfied with Middlesbrough's season so far and will see any kind of result at Old Trafford as a welcome new year bonus.

It was a toxic atmosphere at the Liberty Stadium on Boxing Day as Swansea surrendered meekly to West Ham.

The club whose unity has been admired for years has been ripped apart, losing their identity, although some of that will be recovered with Swans legend Alan Curtis now temporarily in charge.

Bob Bradley was helped by his nationality to get the manager's job, but he was wrongly damned by many simply for being from the USA.

Bournemouth will be confident of putting their season back on track with a victory, and unless Curtis can work miracles in the space of just a few days, that's probably what will happen.

Alan Curtis has certainly rung the changes for Swansea, making seven to the side that started the defeat by West Ham. Kyle Naughton, Jordi Amat, Neil Taylor, Ki Sung-Yueng, Nathan Dyer, Leroy Fer and Fernando Llorente all get the nod.

Swansea XI: Fabianski, Naughton, Mawson, Amat, Taylor, Britton, Ki, Fer, Dyer, Sigurdsson, Llorente.

Eddie Howe makes four changes to the side that lost at Chelsea, with Nathan Ake, Ryan Fraser, Junior Stanislas and Benick Afobe coming in. On-loan defender Ake was prevented from playing against his parent club on Boxing Day.

Bournemouth XI: Borus, Francis, S Cook, Ake, Daniels, Surman, Arter, Wilshere, Stanislas, Fraser, Afobe.

Southampton fans hardly need a crystal ball to gaze at what lies ahead in 2017.

Once again, the recruitment department have come up trumps. While I don't expect to see Virgil van Dijk leave in January, it's hard to imagine Saints turning down £40m or more in the summer.

Although being constantly raided for talent is galling, I'm sure Saints fans will look at the turmoil at the likes of Swansea and Crystal Palace in recent weeks and be thankful with their lot.

West Brom boss Tony Pulis saw his side test Arsenal on Boxing Day, despite rarely having possession. He'll feel he has the tools to snatch only their second win in 22 fixtures in Southampton.

  19. Team newspublished at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2016

Southampton v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

It's a bit of an overhaul for Southampton. Claude Puel reacts to conceding four against Tottenham by making six changes, three of which are in the back four.

Only Virgil van Dijk survives in the defensive unit. Sam McQueen is in for Ryan Bertrand, Cuco Martina for Cedric Soares and Maya Yoshida for Jose Fonte.

Further forward Shane Long replaces Jay Rodriguez, while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is in for James Ward-Prowse.

Tony Pulis makes perhaps a surprise change to his side after defeat at Arsenal. Salomon Rondon is out and Hal Robson-Kanu gets the nod for his first start of the season. That's their only change.
