Justin Lavelle: How many goals would City have if Sterling had any sense of composure on the ball?

James Lockwood: Very entertaining first half, MCFC might rue missed chances! Aguero & co. need to be more clinical!

Bob: If Spurs have any pretentions to be champions they cannot allow themselves to be dominated like this. There must be a plan B.

Former Manchester City player Paul Lake on BBC Radio Manchester: “Tottenham have been really stretched and working hard to get on the ball.

"They have been fortunate but come through unscathed.

"City are by far the better team but concerns for both teams at half time."

Teez: Pochettino's managerial chops being tested here. He's definitely going to need to make some changes

Kritt Normsaskul: Testament to Spurs' progress under Pochettino. Under the cosh but still in it when in the past they would have crumbled

OletuMMR: I could watch Dembele play all day, he is the ultimate midfielder. What a pleasure

David Silva with some sumptuous control to drift past two Spurs shirts tight on the left wing. Toby Alderweireld just gets a toe to the dinked pass that almost finds Leroy Sane with space to shoot.

Aleksander Kolarov goes in the book for a cynical foul on Harry Kane as Spurs break up the pitch.

A low pass from the left finds Raheem Sterling in the box, he shifts into space and Vincent Wanyama does brilliantly to block the shot.

The two then come together again and Sterling falls to the floor, the home fans want a penalty but the ref waves the shouts away. Looked like there was very little in it.

    Spurs are hanging on...

Spurs have had just one touch in the City box this whole half.

They look to buy themselves passage to half-time with some short passing. City are ready to snap into action at the slightest hint of a mistake.

The pressure's coming thicker and faster.

Another Sergio Aguero shot is parried wide by Hugo Lloris. There's a cross from deep on the right flank that pings onto the roof of Spurs' net, and then yet another shot from range is fielded well by the French keeper, punched to safety.

At this rate, Spurs would do well to hang on until the break.

“They have created some great chances but they have fallen to the wrong players.”

  12. Man City's familiar failingpublished at 18:08 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January 2017

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Etihad Stadium

One of Pep Guardiola's complaints after the defeat at Everton was that Manchester City wasted their chances while every time their opponents arrived in front of goal they scored.

He must hope something similar is not going to happen today because City are in complete control but failing to make their superiority count.

Fine hands from Hugo Lloris to land Sergio Aguero's drifting header but might City have made more of that?

There was a loose pass out from Kevin Wimmer and City swarmed on it, but Ageuro might have had a shot sooner instead of finding Kevin de Bruyne out wide for the cross.

Two can play at the high-pressing game. Victor Wanyama, followed by Danny Rose, they both go all in but come up empty-handed.

Space opens up for City through Sergio Aguero on the right wing, a Kevin de Bruyne effort from the edge is deflected out wide to Gael Clichy, whose cross picks out Leroy Sane as Spurs' back-line scrambles back into shape... but the Germany international's nod towards goal is not precise.

He rests his head on the turf. What if.

This is better from the away side. Their first spell of sustained possession as City are forced back.

Mousa Demeble twines Yaya Toure with a silky touch, plays in Danny Rose, but the England left-back's cross is blocked.

Vincent Wanyama can shoot from range - but Spurs' first attempt on goal is a terrible one. Leaning back all the way, the Kenya midfielder.

Relentless harrying from City. Eric Dier is robbed of possession as Sergio Aguero forces him off the ball on the edge of his box to feed in Kevin de Bruyne.

But the Belgian's ball looking for a blue shirt at the back post is poor, it dribbles out of play for a Spurs goal kick.

Will Spurs have got the message? No more short ones please Hugo, Dier will be saying.

Joshua Dagnall: How Otamendi is hanging on to his starting spot in the City team is a mystery to me. Has he hit a pass today ?
