  1. goal

GOAL - Plymouth Argyle 0-1 Liverpoolpublished at 20:05 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Lucas (18 mins)

An unlikely scorer, a thoroughly deserved lead. As simple as it gets, the sort of goal which will drive Derek Adams mad as well. A Philippe Coutinho corner is whipped in, nobody in a green shirt is ever close to Lucas and he buries the free header for his first goal since 2010 (TWO THOUSAND AND TEN!)

    John Hartson
Ex-Wales striker on BBC Radio 5 live

Plymouth are defending well, Liverpool have had one or two half chances but nothing clear-cut.

Liverpool are dominating possession as we saw at Anfield but when they get into that final third they need to show a bit of quality that they didn't have in the first match.

  3. CLOSE!published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Newcastle United 1-0 Birmingham City

There is a chance though for Birmingham as Wales winger David Cotterill has a dig from a good 20 yards or so, it flies wide but it had the interest of Newcastle keeper Matz Sels all the way.

David Knowles: Amazing support at Plymouth. Very loyal filling their stadium like that. Lesser clubs must be intimidated when visiting Home Park.

Andrew Neill: Fabulous ball by Jonjo Shelvey in the lead up to the (Newcastle) penalty. That sort of vision and ability has been sorely missed recently.

Robbie Goodall: Matt Ritchie always seems to go down the middle and it always works! Reassuring start for the lads!

Not much sign of a Birmingham fightback thus far, the hosts continuing to boss possession.

  7. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Plymouth Argyle 0-0 Liverpool

Daniel Sturridge wants a penalty as he chops the ball between his legs and past Oscar Threlkeld, who seemed to take a chunk of the England striker, but referee Graham Scott is not interested.

  8. CLOSE!published at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Plymouth Argyle 0-0 Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold had a good Premier League debut at Old Trafford at the weekend and he floats in a decent cross from the right, it's dropping neatly for Philippe Coutinho but the usually reliable Brazilian takes his eye off the ball and slices his effort tamely wide.

Deejay Swifty: After a typical week of negative press on NUFC, coupled with injuries to key players, a convincing win would be welcomed with open arms.

    Plymouth Argyle 0-0 Liverpool

Plymouth get eight or nine men in a row behind the ball - Liverpool will recognise this - and after a steady spell of possession Daniel Sturridge loses his composure and lashes well over the bar.

  14. Postpublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Plymouth Argyle 0-0 Liverpool

The League Two side force a corner through Oscar Threlkeld and it's a half chance, headed wildly over by Arnold Garita!

  15. Postpublished at 19:51 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    Newcastle United 0-0 Birmingham City

Newcastle, as you'd perhaps expect, are seeing all of the ball in these early stages. No chances as of yet.

    Cameroon 0-1 Guinea-Bissau

The Wild Dogs are savaging the Slumbering Lions. While the Africa Cup of Nations might not offer the highest level of football, it does provide the greatest nicknames.

Actually we're doing the standard a disservice - we've just seen a 'worldie' of an opening goal in this Group A match.

Guinea-Bissau forward Piquito gets the Wild Dogs barking with a superb solo goal. Picking the ball inside his own half, he lobs the ball over one opponent, skins another couple then slams a rising drive into the onion bag. Think Maradona against England at Mexico '86. Not THAT one. The other one.

Four-time champions Cameroon cannot be eliminated tonight - but defeat will leave them with just a point from their opening two games.

Andrew Harper: Being a @NUFC, external fan am extremely worried about the game tonight and so much depends on a good positive up tempo start.

David India: NO shock! Newcastle, Liverpool and Southampton are all going to WIN.
