Now then, that is a spicy deadline day development. Pinching the top scorer of your nearest rivals? Quite brilliant.

I'm told that it's 30 years since a player moved from Rovers to City.

They'll be dancing on the streets of Southville and kicking cats in Horfield.

Scott Jones: Just bought a load of xmas decorations. Absolute steal, sending them on loan to the loft. Should be back for December.

William Woodland: Bought a phone case. Adds some strength at the back but doesn't really add much going forward. Will probably be dropped.

Scott Andrews: I've had preliminary talks about a sausage and egg mcmuffin with my wife but we are yet to come to an agreement.

  4. The curious case of West Ham's strikerspublished at 09:42 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

A few minutes ago we brought you the stunning news that West Ham tried to sign Demba Ba. The stunning bit wasn't the bid for Ba, but that the Hammers actually admitted to it.

Then again, they do have an addiction to signing strikers...

  5. 'Arsenal's £85m in the bank'published at 09:40 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    The fans' view

    Arsenal
    Tim Payton, Arsenal Supporters' Trust

Arsenal Supporters' Trust analysis of club accounts shows circa £85m in their transfer fund but it looks certain to be a quiet transfer window, with manager Arsene Wenger confirming that the club have no plans to do any business.

The present Arsenal squad does look as strong as its been in a while, partly as a result of having far fewer players in the treatment room than usual for this stage of the season.

The return from injury of Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott gives Wenger an abundance of attacking talent to choose from. Perhaps the position to worry about most, as the games come thick and fast, is cover at right-back.

No doubt the signings that matter most to Arsenal fans at the moment are the contract renewals of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but I expect it will be a few more months before we get any definitive news on those.

  6. Done deal - Adebayor to Istanbul Basaksehirpublished at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    What are they thinking?

Istanbul Basaksehir, second in the Turkish top flight, have signed unattached striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Presumably his wage demands are low because he's still being paid by about four other clubs.

Jermain Defoe - West Ham to Spurs (£7m)

Jermain Defoe, then a 21-year-old goalscoring prodigy, was itching a for a move from relegated West Ham – he put in a transfer request less than 24 hours after the Hammers went down the previous year.

As he waited to leave Upton Park, he racked up 15 goals and three red cards, eventually joining Spurs as part of a deal that saw Bobby Zamora move the other way.

Defoe scored 43 Premier League goals until joining Portsmouth in 2008, but found himself back at White Hart Lane for double Pompey’s £7.5m fee a year later.

  10. Toffees hoping for morepublished at 09:28 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2017

    The fans' view

    Everton

Although Ronald Koeman’s frustration at the lack of signings earlier this month was followed quickly by the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin, things have gone rather quiet in terms of further acquisitions since.

A number of fringe players have been shipped out on loan or permanent deals and the likes of Arouna Kone could follow before the deadline but Evertonians are hopeful that one or two incoming deals could still be done to add genuine quality.

If so, the names could be surprises because no-one specific seems to be close to joining on the final day of the window.

If David Sullivan was any more open, he'd give out his bank account details. On Reece Oxford, the young defender has said on social media that he is "en route". We assume he means to Reading, but he could just be off to the supermarket.

I'm not having that for one second. David Sullivan is having us on there. It almost worked too. Well played, sir.

The Hammers already have Andy Carroll. No club needs two lumbering, injury-prone strikers.

    Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG (£60m)

It’s a measure of the cash washing around in Chinese football that a fella who can’t get a game for Chelsea could be worth £60m to Shanghai SIPG.

Brazilian midfielder Oscar’s move sparked some panic that other, more valuable, commodities might be lured from the Premier League, but that has been calmed by stricter rules on overseas players in the Chinese Super League.

Still, it began the transfer window with a big move of the cash needle.
